Our Cabarrus County Strengthening Families participants completed a journey that will have a lasting impact on their families and their futures.

These moments represent more than a graduation, they reflect parents choosing to grow, strengthen relationships, and build healthier environments for their children.

At Families First, we are proud to support families every step of the way.

Because when families are strengthened, children are protected!

At Families First, some of our most important lessons come from a few friendly faces.

Through our Second Step program, children learn important social and emotional skills with the help of characters like Puppy, Calm Bunny, and Snail.

These characters help children practice:

• Slowing down and thinking before reacting
• Following rules and listening carefully
• Understanding feelings and showing empathy
• Making safe and respectful choices

Using stories, puppets, and interactive activities, Second Step helps children build the confidence and emotional skills they need to succeed at school, at home, and in their communities.

Because learning how to manage emotions and build healthy relationships is a skill that lasts a lifetime.

March is National Social Work Month 💙

Families First would like to take a moment to recognize and thank the incredible social workers in our community who advocate for children, support families, and work tirelessly to connect people with the resources they need.

Social workers are often the quiet champions behind the scenes — showing up during life’s most difficult moments to help families find stability, healing, and hope. Their dedication helps strengthen our entire community.

We are grateful for the many social workers who partner with us, refer families to our programs, and collaborate to ensure children and parents receive the support they deserve.

Thank you for the compassion, advocacy, and commitment you bring to this work every single day.

Families grow stronger when they grow together. 💙

Our next Strengthening Families class is right around the corner, and we’re inviting parents and youth to join us for an engaging, supportive experience designed to build stronger connections at home.

This program helps families:

• Improve communication
• Set healthy boundaries
• Strengthen relationships
• Support children’s emotional well-being
• Navigate challenges like peer pressure, risky behaviors, and substance use concerns

Each session includes a free warm meal so families can sit down and eat together — because connection matters both inside and outside the classroom.

If you’re looking for practical tools, real conversations, and a supportive space for your family, this class is for you.

Every child deserves a safe space to maintain connection

Visitation Station provides a structured, supervised environment where parents and children can spend meaningful time together during challenging family transitions — including domestic situations where safety and accountability matter most.

Our goal is simple:
✔️ Protect children
✔️ Promote healthy interaction
✔️ Support families through difficult seasons
✔️ Encourage positive parenting in a monitored setting

This is more than a visit.
It’s a safe space.
It’s stability.
It’s support when families need it most.

If you would like to learn more about Visitation Station or need services, please contact us at 704-630-0481.

Dr. Mamie Phipps Clark is one of the first Black women to earn a doctorate in psychology. She helped shape our understanding of how a child’s environment impacts their emotional development and self-esteem.

Her groundbreaking research emphasized that children thrive when they feel seen, valued, and supported.

That same belief lives on today through our Second Step Program, where we teach young learners skills like:

✨ Emotional regulation
✨ Empathy
✨ Respect for others
✨ Problem-solving
✨ Healthy decision-making

Families First is proud to continue that legacy by supporting the whole child — academically, socially, and emotionally.

There is something powerful about young people choosing growth for themselves.

These youth are taking the initiative to enroll in our Strengthening Families Program (SFP) — making a decision to invest in stronger communication, healthier relationships, and a better future.

Strengthening Families is a 14-week evidence-based program for families with youth ages 6–17. Each week, families come together to:

✨ Build stronger connections at home
✨ Improve communication
✨ Set clear and healthy boundaries
✨ Navigate peer pressure and risky behaviors
✨ Address substance use concerns with real-life tools

What makes this even more meaningful?

Some of these teens are signing up on their own. That tells us something — our youth want support, structure, and safe spaces to grow.

If your family is ready to strengthen the foundation, Families First is here to assist.

AP3 at Livingstone College — Cohort One Complete & Cohort Two Loading!

We are still celebrating the incredible energy and engagement from our first AP3 cohort at Livingstone College — and we are excited to announce that we are gearing up for our second cohort!

Through our Adolescent Prevention Program (AP3), we've partnered with Livingstone’s first-year honors students to create space for meaningful conversations around:

✨ Healthy relationships
✨ Leadership development
✨ Personal responsibility
✨ Informed decision-making
✨ Navigating peer pressure and risky behaviors

AP3 is designed to equip young leaders with real-life tools that strengthen character, build confidence, and promote healthy choices — both personally and in community.

We are proud to collaborate with Livingstone College in investing in the next generation of leaders right here in Salisbury.

Strong youth. Strong choices. Strong futures. ♥
