After 50 years signature whistle research returns to Marineland!

Started in the 1960s by Marineland scientists David and Melba Caldwell, this research began a line of inquiry that would not only be pivotal to our understanding of dolphins, but animal communication broadly. Signature whistles function like dolphin “names” and are arguably the most “language-like” thing we know about in non-human animal communication systems. Signature whistles refer to specific dolphins and can even be used by individuals to address each other. We even know that dolphins have a symbolic understanding of signature whistles, which means that, much like how you can picture a best friend upon hearing their name, dolphins too can form mental representations of the known dolphins whose signatures they hear. Fifty years later Marineland researchers and graduate students from Stephen F. Austin State University are working to find out how manmade noise affects signature whistle transmission from dolphin to dolphin. This work will have essential conservation implications moving forward.
