VAAP applauds the signing of Virginia’s behavioral health parity legislation, an important step forward in strengthening access to mental health and substance use disorder treatment across the Commonwealth.

Mental health parity laws are designed to ensure that behavioral health services are covered more equitably by insurance plans — helping reduce barriers related to access, provider networks, treatment limitations, and coverage disparities between behavioral health and physical healthcare.

For addiction professionals, providers, recovery organizations, and the individuals and families they serve, these protections matter deeply.

This legislation represents meaningful progress toward improving accountability, strengthening behavioral health access, and recognizing substance use and mental health treatment as essential components of healthcare.
