We provide practical training to leaders desiring to effectively perform ministry and outreach in urban communities. Rebuilding faith in the community!

The Richmond Urban Ministry Institute (RUMI) exists to provide practical training to leaders who desire to effectively perform Christian ministries and outreach in urban communities. Our programs provide our student leaders a way of understanding poverty, justice, community development and the role of the Church in holistic ministry. Our school community has a purposefully urban, culturally diverse and inclusive focus. Our urban setting indicates a commitment to inner-city ministry and outreach. Our campus and dormitory are in the urban center, and we find this to be a beneficial setting to prepare students bring the Gospel to the hurting and marginalized within Richmond. Our location is directly linked to our urban context. We are a product of the city. The many social challenges and positive resources of urban living are a part of who we are. Upon completion of the program, our students may receive either a Certificate in Christian Leadership, Certificate in Urban Theology, Associate's Degree in Ministerial Studies, or Bachelor's Degree in Christian Education.

For years, Juan Braxton has led efforts to bring awareness, resources, and community engagement to the Chamberlayne corridor through National Gun Violence Awareness Day.

This year’s Community Day Out once again brought neighbors together for food, fellowship, resource sharing, and meaningful conversation.

Richmond Urban Ministry Institute (RUMI) is proud to support this annual tradition and the ongoing work of creating safer, stronger communities.

Thank you, Juan, and everyone who continues to show up and invest in Richmond.

On Saturday, the community came together,
not just to pray, but to stand side by side.

Different ages. Different backgrounds.
One purpose.

We shared moments of prayer…
moments of connection…
moments of joy, food, and fellowship.

This wasn’t just an event.
This was community in action.

From the volunteers serving…
to families showing up…
to neighbors standing together in prayer,
this is what makes Richmond strong.

🙏 Thank you to everyone who came out, served, and supported the RUMI Prayer Chain

See you all tomorrow

This is what community looks like.

Miss Jones and her team have already been putting in the work.

Hundreds of Easter eggs prepared.
Time. Energy. Love.

All so families, kids, and the community can come together and experience something special.

This is bigger than an event.
This is people showing up for each other.

💛 Tomorrow is the day.

It started with tragedy.

A 12-year-old girl lost her life…
And it shook this community to its core.

That moment became the reason behind something bigger —
a movement of prayer, purpose, and unity.

Juan shares how the RUMI Prayer Chain isn’t just an event…
It’s something God-driven, something intentional, something that brings people together when the city needs it the most.

Because the truth is…

A lot of people are hurting.
A lot of people feel lost.
And a lot of people don’t have hope.

But there is still a place where we can come together.

Richmond he is hurting.

After the recent tragedy in Shockoe Bottom and so many other moments of pain in our city, we are reminded that our community needs unity, healing, and hope more than ever.

Juan Braxton shares why the RUMI Prayer Chain matters — because this isn’t just a random prayer gathering. It’s prayer with intention, standing together as a community and bringing our city’s struggles directly to God.

When people are hurting and hope feels far away, the most powerful thing we can do is come together.
