Our Southeast Forestry Communications Specialist, Shelby Flores, joined our Great Lakes team for a visit to the Great Northwoods to interview local business owners. In her latest blog post, "Why Neglecting the Great Northwoods Threatens Michigan’s Businesses," Shelby explores how these 60 million acres of pristine forest across Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota sustain local communities and economies—ranging from tourism to fly-fishing—while highlighting how environmental shifts now endanger these livelihoods.

What an incredible resource workshop! 🌲

Our Longleaf Landowner Mentor Mitchell Locklear hosted his Landowner Resource Workshop last week, and we're still reeling over it! From the tour of his property to learning about longleaf pine restoration, bottomland hardwoods, and native wildlife, it was truly an evening to remember. Landowners saw various stages of longleaf, learned about tradeoffs in management approaches, and witnessed the benefits of wildlife corridors between stands.

Thank you to the NC Wildlife Resources Commission, North Carolina Wildlife Federation, NC Forest Service, Sandhills Prescribed Burn Association, and USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service for being a part of our event!

How can landscapers, homeowners, and businesses support local farmers and conservation? Wildlife-friendly pine straw offers a clear choice! 🌾

NWF's Landowner Mentor, Mr. Herbert Hodges, recently made his first sale of wildlife-friendly pine straw! Sourced in Swainsboro, Georgia, Mr. Hodges's pine straw is harvested in a way that protects the longleaf pine ecosystem and the wildlife that depend on it. Victory Gardens installed these bales at the Ships Of The Sea Maritime Museum and other properties in Savannah, Georgia! Special thanks to Reid Archer and the team at Victory Gardens for their insight into consumer values and their approach to landscaping.

This milestone is part of a pilot project in partnership with the US Forest Service, supported by the National Wildlife Federation’s Southeast Forestry team.

That’s a wrap on Longleaf and the Landowner! 🌲

The Longleaf & the Landowner Academy just finished an incredible three-day run. From deep-dives in the classroom to hands-on work in the field, we covered it all, whether that be Longleaf ecology or the essential details of heirs’ property and business planning.

Celebrating our first installation of wildlife-friendly pine straw! 🌾🚜👨‍🌾

NWF's Landowner Mentor, Mr. Herbert Hodges, made his first sale of wildlife-friendly pine straw! This achievement is part of a pilot project in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service, supported by the National Wildlife Federation’s Southeast Forestry team. Victory Gardens installed the product with educational signage at the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum in Savannah, Georgia.

Mr. Hodges's pine straw, which was hand raked and box baled in Swainsboro, Georgia is harvested in a way that protects the longleaf pine ecosystem and the wildlife that depend on it. By reducing chemical use, avoiding heavy equipment, and maintaining regular fire, we can keep the forest's plants and wildlife health for future generations. We're incredibly proud of this milestone and his commitment to protecting wildlife while generating income from his property.

Every day is Earth Day! 🌎

Nature’s endurance is on full display this Earth Day, especially in longleaf pine forests. These resilient landscapes tell a story of survival across the Southeastern U.S., thriving in sandy soils and dancing with fire. Let’s celebrate this biodiverse wonder and ensure its beauty persists for generations.

Experience is the best teacher. 🔥

We are thrilled to celebrate our landowner mentor, Mr. Joseph Hamilton, on leading his first successful Learn & Burn! This milestone was made possible through the invaluable partnership of Chambers English (National Wildlife Federation) and Jennie Haskell (The Longleaf Alliance). Their guidance, from complex permitting to fire ecology instruction, ensured a safe, compliant, and impactful experience. We also want to thank the attending professionals whose hands-on support helped transform Mr. Hamilton’s land into a premier outdoor classroom.

Thank you to our partners America's Longleaf Restoration Initiative, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, National Wildlife Federation, South Carolina Forestry Commission, The Longleaf Alliance, Help For Landowners, and Center for Heirs' Property Preservation for making this event possible!
