It's ! 🦋🌼

🐝Did you know that the longer days of Summer give pollinators more time to forage for nectar? Pollinators like honey and native bees, monarch butterflies, wasps, and more are key to keeping our ecosystems intact by helping vital plants and crops reproduce.

Maintaining the complex ecosystem that keeps us alive and protects iconic pollinators requires leadership on all levels. In the past year alone, 553 acres of monarch habitat have been created or restored by the 275 mayors and heads of local government that completed the Mayors’ Monarch Pledge.

🦋That's roughly 553 football fields of new essential monarch habitat across the monarch’s breeding and migratory areas!

For over a decade now, local governments have stepped up to make wide-scale changes that benefit both people and wildlife. Learn more about why monarchs need mayors in our blog. 📲 https://ow.ly/2fVy50Z87yc

This , put protection over pollution 🌎🦅

For 90 years, the National Wildlife Federation has worked to ensure people and wildlife thrive. In that time, crucial laws like the Clean Air Act became law and significantly improved the health of our environment and communities.

But now those laws and the agencies that enforce them, like the Environmental Protection Agency, are being dismantled by the government’s biggest deregulatory action in American history.

Tell Congress to put , and strengthen the Clean Air Act for healthy wildlife habitat, the climate, and communities. 📲 https://ow.ly/EtzV50Z7ORh

Is Captive Rearing Hurting Monarchs? 👀

Experts say captive rearing—or raising monarchs indoors—poses risks to the butterflies, from disease to decreased fitness.

Despite weighing less than a paper clip, these delicate insects brave storms and exhaustion to reach refuges where warmer temperatures and tall trees provide protection from harsh winter weather—and provide researchers an annual opportunity to estimate the butterflies’ numbers.

Climate change is likely one contributing factor, but indoor rearing of monarch caterpillars also may be sabotaging the migration.

Perhaps a salad? Perhaps not! 🐣🪱

Marti Phillips took this photograph in Tucson while on a birding trip with friends.

They mentioned, "I was on a walk in a local Tucson park when I saw two verdins feeding their chicks. I sat down where I could observe them for a while as one bird would hand off grubs to the other, who would then deliver them to the nest.”

A Pennsylvania community stood up against pollution, and won 🏭💪

When residents of Pittsburg’s North Boroughs began experiencing sudden and unexplained chronic illness, it wasn’t difficult to connect them to the acrid stench and soot coming from the Shenango Coke Works plant nearby.

With the support from organizations like the Breathe Project and dedicated efforts from community members, the issue was raised to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Shenango Coke Works shut down in 2016 after refusing to take measures to reduce their pollution – and hospital visits immediately and sharply declined.
