Tariff evasion enforcement on kitchen cabinets is heating up. In the past year, federal agencies have brought a $109 million DOJ indictment, a $9.3 million CBP recovery involving a stolen identity, a Norfolk shipment seizure, and more — plus a record $1 billion milestone under CBP's duty evasion program.

Big news for trade enforcement — and a big win for domestic cabinet manufacturers.

On Tuesday, the Department of Justice Trade Fraud Task Group announced reaching more than $1 billion in recovered criminal and civil penalties, forfeitures and charged losses. They spotlight the prosecution of an importer who evaded tariffs on gold and other imported products. The Task Group also referenced the UniTile case — a major transshipment and customs fraud scheme involving kitchen cabinets and quartz countertops, prosecuted last December, involving roughly $100 million in evaded tariffs and back duties and penalties reportedly exceeding $200 million.

The Alliance for Trade Enforcement NOW, which KCMA belongs to, helped shape this Task Group. We met directly with DOJ officials and others in the Administration and now we're seeing great work out of the White House on trade fraud and holding illegal importers accountable.
