Common Ground Child Care Center has been serving Reston since 1972.

Common Ground Child Care Center, located at 1700 Wainwright Drive in Reston, Virginia near Reston Town Center, is a tax exempt 501c3 nonprofit child care center. The Center was started in 1972 by the Common Ground Foundation, an organization created to provide solutions for the needs of the community of Reston. Although day to day operations are handled by the Director, Common Ground Child Care has an all volunteer Board of Trustees whose members are ultimately responsible for all aspects of the center. They're entrusted with making sure that management decisions are in the best interest of the centers staff and children and that the original ideals under which the center was founded are upheld.

ECE professionals from around the area invested in themselves by giving up their Saturday to connect, learn, and grow. We are so grateful for our amazing team of teachers, both those pictured and those not pictured!

Staffing: it’s a problem in the childcare industry. Recruitment and retention, ratios, PTO, and qualifications.

Our commitment to invest into our educators has mitigated most staffing issues we face at Common Ground, but we aren’t immune to the global issues.

Childcare as an industry has educators that have been in the field for a LONG time! That institutional knowledge is incredibly valuable and needs to be passed down to the next generation of educators - but how!?

Some childcare centers face staff shortages, high turnover rates, and longstanding teacher vacancies.

Others have longstanding teachers still working full time because there was never an investment into their retirement. They love working, but in some cases they also still have to work. That means wages can’t be allocated to the next generation of teachers.

And with wages in the industry where they are at, we can’t recruit or retain the next generation of teachers. Those that start in ECE/childcare and gain the recommendation education and credentials, are cannibalized by k-12.

We are creative in the way that we solve these problems, but funding is the answer. This industry has been underfunded for so long that there might not be a path forward without a substantial investment.

Look at all those smiling faces! 😂😂

Our older infants and younger toddlers enjoyed a story outside this morning. Parents often ask how we get young children to sit for stories, we’ll do you see how captivating our teacher are!?

In all seriousness, infants and toddlers are allowed to move freely in our programs, but they choose to sit and listen.

We just love that one of our other teachers snapped this photo and we’re so happy to share it with you!
