Thanks to Newsweek for expanding coverage of our Pet Toy Report.

The report shows pet toys are the leading manufactured product linked to injury and death cases reported to Center for Pet Safety. The findings are based on owner complaints, interviews and veterinary records reviewed by CPS.

The majority (83 percent) of toy-related complaints we’ve received involved emergency veterinary treatment for gastrointestinal obstructions caused by pets swallowing toy materials or fragments. Approximately one-quarter of those reported cases ended in fatalities caused by complications such as obstruction, perforation or sepsis.

Once your pet has swallowed pieces of indigestible materials from a pet toy, it's too late. Veterinary intervention will be necessary.

We are independent of industry and work in the consumer interest. We continue to ask manufacturers to monitor product quality control and commit to truth in marketing. Just because it's marked "safe" doesn't mean it actually is.

It’s estimated there are about 35,000 dogs in the United States who are deaf in both ears. Dogs who are deaf in just one ear are more common, about 120,000. In addition, more than 30 breeds of dogs have a known susceptibility for deafness.
