School safety begins at home. Everyone has a role to play — whether that’s securing your gun at home or having conversations with other parents about safe firearm storage.

More than $26,000 in NCCF-managed scholarships were awarded to North Edgecombe High School seniors during the school’s annual awards ceremony, including the Annie and Sallie Ann Wheeler Memorial Scholarship.

Khamaria Wolfe received the Wheeler Scholarship, which awarded a record $9,000. She said the moment meant a great deal to her and is something she will carry forward.

“I will take the scholarship with pride and come back and give back as well as continue my future at Howard University,” she said.

The scholarship was established in 2021 by North Edgecombe alumni and cousins Jamaal Pittman and Linwood Hinton to honor their late great-aunts, Annie and Sallie Ann Wheeler, and to support students who demonstrate academic achievement and a commitment to helping others.

“It’s having that young woman or that young man walking across that stage know that you’re coming from here, but you can also reach back and help the next generation as well,” said Hinton, who travels annually from California to present the Wheeler Scholarship.

The evening also included additional NCCF scholarships supporting graduating seniors from North Edgecombe High School.

NCCF Is proud to recognize Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month and the lasting contributions of AAPI families across our state.

Through the Sharma Family Scholarship Fund, established with NCCF in 2006, the Sharma family has supported North Carolina students pursuing STEM degrees at NC State University, awarding more than $69,000 in scholarships to date. “Without education, your development will be restricted… without education, you cannot progress," said Dr. Ganga Dhar Sharma, who turned 100 this year.

When Dr. Sharma and his family arrived in North Carolina in the early 1970s, the Indian community in the Triangle was small. Along with other families, he helped establish the Hindu Society of North Carolina in 1976, which has grown from a small group of families into a major Morrisville institution serving thousands across the region. Dr. Sharma is often joined in that work by his wife, Saroj Sharma.

Today, a third generation of the Sharma family is involved with the scholarship fund, continuing a commitment to education, service and opportunity for Triangle-area students. “Who would have thought it would become a legacy? But that’s what it’s become,” said Dr. Madhu Sharma, daughter of Dr. Sharma.

🎓 Congratulations to Paris Wilkins! She recently graduated summa cm laude from North Carolina Central University with a degree in history, the only student in that department to do so.
Paris received two scholarships through NCCF during her college career: The McBryde Scholarship Endowment and the Mary Ferebee Howard Scholarship.
She wrote: “Your generosity truly helped me more than you know and allowed me to complete my time at NCCU without having to worry about paying out of pocket.”
