Dearonne Bethea lives in Hawaii, thousands of miles from his hometown of Enfield, but he has never forgotten the community that helped raise him.

“When I left home many years ago, I always knew I wanted to come back and give,” he said. “A lot of these people, I slept at their house. I grew up with their kids. They raised me.”

Through the Dearonne and Pamela Bethea Foundation Gift Fund at NCCF, Dearonne and his wife Pamela have awarded more than $62,000 in grants supporting communities in Halifax County and Hawaii, from scholarships and school field trips to holiday meals, mobile food distributions and disaster relief.

Last fall, that commitment brought the Betheas back to Enfield, where they helped organize a Thanksgiving food distribution that provided hot meals, fresh produce and pantry staples to more than 300 Enfield families.

This Black Philanthropy Month, we're celebrating Dearonne and Pamela and the lasting impact that comes from giving back to the communities that helped shape us.

After Lorie Lindsley was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, she and her husband, Steve, wanted to make sure the compassion that defined her life would continue to make a difference after she was gone.

Together, they found a way to ensure the causes Lorie cared about most, from animal welfare to children facing disadvantages, would continue to receive support through a donor advised fund with the North Carolina Community Foundation.

In this video, Steve shares how the Lorie S. Lindsley Compassionate Hearts Legacy Fund is helping carry that legacy forward.
