Artspace exists to inspire creative energy by engaging and educating all in the community about the creative process. Artspace believes in supporting the careers and development of artists of all levels by providing time and space to work, the opportunity to engage with other artists locally and outside of the community, exposure to the community through exhibiting their work, and professional dev

elopment opportunities. Artspace serves the public by introducing them to diverse artistic styles from artists both inside and outside of the area and by further educating them regarding the creative process. We believe in creating avenues whereby the public and artists can come together to engender a better understanding and commitment to the visual arts. At Artspace we host an environment in which artists of all levels and ages can learn and exchange ideas. Whatever boundaries one may face to experiencing the creative process (the stigma of elitism, expensive classes, physical disabilities, etc), Artspace breaks down those barriers by being accessible and real. We believe that nourishing the soul is vitally important to our community’s well-being. We would be remiss if we did not reach out to everyone in the community as we seek to improve the community as a whole. By bringing free art programming to children and adults where they live and play, we are breaking down the barriers of cost and transportation that may hinder many economically-disadvantaged families from participating in arts education. Artspace challenges members of our community to appreciate and learn from art, to express themselves, and to positively engage in and influence their surroundings. By doing so, we hope to create leaders of tomorrow that will follow their intuition and inspire others to think creatively to address community issues.

This panel discussion brings together three current and former Artspace Creative Directors: Jonh Blanco, Annah Lee, and Lia Newman. In connection with FRESH 2026, Artspace’s biennial exhibition of North Carolina artists, the conversation will explore the relationship between curators and artists in today’s contemporary art landscape.

Participants will learn about how artists are selected and supported by arts institutions, the individual curatorial approaches of each panelist, and the opportunities and challenges of the field. The panel discussion will be followed by an audience Q&A.

Celebrate North Carolina artists all fall at our FRESH events! We have an amazing line-up of upcoming programs (mostly free events), and we can't wait to see you there!

🎨 About the exhibition: FRESH is a biennial fundraising exhibition that celebrates the incredible creative output across North Carolina, while demystifying the typical art jurying process.

🎨 Unlike a traditional juried exhibition, all submitted works will be displayed in Artspace's main gallery spaces for six weeks before juror Lia Newman makes her selections. The final juried exhibition debuts on October 29, 2026, representing a diverse cross-section of the imaginative and thought-provoking art that is being created across our state today.

Join acclaimed writers Alexis Pauline Gumbs and Richard J. Powell for a conversation celebrating the legacy of pioneering artist Alma Thomas and the enduring influence of Black artistry. The program brings Gumbs and Powell together in celebration of their new books, "Primary" and "Colorstruck!".

As the first graduate of Howard University's art department, Thomas holds an important place within the history of HBCU arts education and American abstraction. Through readings and conversation, Gumbs and Powell will reflect on her creative legacy, the possibilities of writing alongside visual art, and the many shades of Black artistic expression that continue to emerge in her wake.

Join us for a serene artmaking experience where you'll explore a calming, restorative practice of plein air drawing and use the healing power of nature to support your mental well-being. Led by artist and art therapist Lamar Whidbee, this workshop invites you to slow down and explore the natural world through a guided artistic approach that emphasizes mindfulness and stress relief. This session offers a welcoming space to quiet your mind, hone your observational skills, and find peace outdoors. As such, this workshop is open to all skill levels.

On the First Friday of every month from 5-10pm, we offer a FREE night of exhibitions, activities, and more! Our First Friday also includes a sensory-friendly time with smaller crowds and no amplified music from 5-6pm.

Thank you for joining us last weekend at Summer Celebration! We welcomed over 500 visitors to celebrate the end of summer and the work of our amazing Summer Art Program students!

It's always a treat to see our youth and teen artists got to show off their drawings, sculptures, paintings, animations, jewelry, and more to their family and friends 🎨 Thank you as well to the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, Sky Dai, and O:HU Bakeshop for helping us activate the space!

Learn unique printmaking techniques and create an artwork inspired by the Downtown Raleigh landscape!

Explore downtown Raleigh in a whole new way by collecting its hidden patterns, textures, and histories. Using a low-tech texture collection technique, participants will press into sidewalks, bricks, metal grates, tree bark, architectural details, and other surfaces to create detailed texture impressions, then use ink to transfer these collected textures into a visual journal that you’ll fill up with hand-printed urban data.

Back in the studio, we’ll use our collected textures and apply traditional collage techniques to create unique compositions that compel the eye. Part urban walk, part printmaking adventure, this workshop invites you to slow down, observe closely, and see familiar places through their surfaces.
