AVAILABLE FOR RESTORATION: Help Save This Lovely Lady in Raleigh!

The P. Edgar Furr House is an impressive Queen Anne-style house in Raleigh’s highly desirable Glenwood-Brooklyn neighborhood built in 1913. The house incorporated the latest design trends of the era, including a wraparound porch topped by decorative gables and fanlight. The stunning front door features a wide fanlight and sidelights with bold Craftsman muntin designs allowing natural light into the front entrance parlor. The tall, spacious rooms feature pocket doors, stained wood mantels with tile surrounds including a notable rift-cut white oak corner mantel in the entrance, original light fixtures with push button switches, plaster walls and picture molding, and a Craftsman-inspired stained glass window.

This stylish gem has been vacant in recent years and suffered from significant deferred maintenance. Still, the house has retained much of its original features and materials, some stored onsite, which translates to an excellent investment for a buyer searching for a great historic house in a walkable downtown Raleigh neighborhood. Located in both local and National Register historic districts, the property is eligible for historic rehabilitation tax credits.

Time is of the essence for our newest endangered property. A Demolition by Neglect action was filed last year and is delayed through this Fall. Help us save this architectural beauty from becoming yet another Raleigh teardown.

🧹VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Join Preservation NC for a SAFE DAY (Saving Architecture For Everyone) at the Z. W. Evans House in Edenton THIS SATURDAY, JUNE 13. SAFE Days are an important part of PNC’s Endangered Properties Program where volunteers assist with cleanup to help us bring a property to market.

🏠The Z. W. Evans House, built 1883-84, is located just north of the charming coastal town of Edenton. The appearance of the house dates from a 1917 expansion designed by architect Walter S. Pardee of Minneapolis, MN. The architect, who had married into the Evans family, displayed his admiration of Frank Lloyd Wright in the deep exterior eaves and austere trim. The house was first sold through PNC’s Endangered Properties Program in 2000. Though it was occupied and well-maintained into the 2010s, it fell into disrepair after its elderly owner could no longer maintain its care. Materials have been removed inside the house and overgrown vegetation removed outside, but much cleanup work remains to prepare it for marketing. The property will be sold subject to PNC covenants and a Rehabilitation Agreement with the new buyer.

🤝Come out this Saturday to help us prepare for the home’s next preservation chapter! Visit PresNC.org for details.

06/05/2026

This week, we're introducing our June America 250 Across NC series with a study of North Carolina's Romantic Era Architecture. NC’s 19th century Romantic Era was inspired by an artistic, literary, musical, and intellectual movement that began in Europe. Romanticism emphasized emotion and beauty over the logic and order of the previous Neoclassical Period. Romantic Era architecture chronicled wealth derived from cotton and to***co booms and the rise of industrialization beginning in 1844.

Today, we're launching the June series with some architectural details that define the Romantic Era: heavy bracketed eaves, paired arched windows, mansard roofs, and patterned brick and shingles. Follow along this month as we explore Romantic Era styles in more detail.

Our America 250 in NC series only focuses on properties that are protected by our preservation covenants. These are legally-binding protections that owners place on a property and are monitored by PNC in perpetuity.

Meet our 2026 Summer Interns!

MYRICK HOWARD PRESERVATION INTERN: ALLIE COOK
Allie is a rising junior at Connecticut College where she is currently pursuing a double major in Architectural Studies and Anthropology with a concentration in Archaeology. Allie is engaged in the college's center for community action, and also serves as the Chair of Sustainability of the Student Government Association. Allie will be assisting PNC's Endangered Properties team with inspections of some of the 900+ historic properties protected by PNC. Allie looks forward to learning more about North Carolina's historic properties and the field of historic preservation.

RICHARD HAMPTON JENRETTE FOUNDATION INTERN: GEORGIA BURRESS
Georgia is a dual degree master student from UNC Charlotte, studying public history and architecture, with a critical heritage concentration. Originally from Burlington NC, Georgia's research focuses include historic home preservation, Southern history post Civil War, African American history, and Women's history. Georgia earned her BA in history from Appalachian State University in December 2024. This summer, Georgia will assist PNC in creating a feasibility study for reuse of the Stanford Community Center in Duplin County, a property protected by PNC since 2000.

These internships are made possible by generous donors who endowed the Myrick Howard Preservation Internship in honor of his retirement after 45 years of leadership at PNC, and by a 2026 grant from the Richard Hampton Jenrette Foundation. Their work will support our Endangered Properties Program while providing them with real-world experience in the field of historic preservation.

THIS SATURDAY in Hillsborough: hand-carved mantels, original hardware, pocket doors, stained glass, wavy glass, glass-front cabinets, Masonic treasures, mill stones, wraparound porches, towering magnolias, bricks on bricks on bricks, tended gardens, and one person whispering, “I wish my house had ceilings this tall.”

Side effects may include: excessive photos of grand staircases, newfound opinions about decorative objects, and the urge to point at pocket doors that slide like a small miracle.

At no extra charge: boxwood hedges, flagstone paths, built-ins (all types), tall baseboards, whiskey tasting, one string quartet, sundials + plenty of inspiration.

And don’t forget to tag us in your photos, we love seeing the tour through your eyes!
