NC Reading Service would like to help promote White Cane Day 2026, an event being held by the North Carolina Council of the Blind.

"Please join the North Carolina Council for the Blind for the 2026 White Cane Day celebration at the NC Legislature next Thursday, October 15th at 10am. The event will take place on the lawn to the left of the front entrance off of Jones St. and will include the presentation of Proclamations from both the Governor and the Raleigh City Council. Prominent local advocates and public officials will give remarks about the importance of building accessible public spaces that allow people who are disabled to fully participate in public life.

There are hundreds of thousands of low-vision and blind people living in North Carolina. For many, the White Cane is a symbol of independence and inclusion, as well as a tool with which to navigate the world safely. In the public right-of-way, it is a traffic control device - meant to signal drivers to stop for blind and low-vision people crossing at a crosswalk or intersection.
