Over the weekend, we learned of the tragic passing of a Black man near Nash Square in downtown Raleigh. While officials and news outlets have been quick to dismiss the incident as a su***de by hanging, the national rise in suspicious deaths of Black people requires a pause. The initial response and continued reporting read as indifferent and insensitive to Black life.

For many of us, it’s hard to believe that anyone would choose this for themselves. While su***de rates for Black people have been on the rise, the quick rush to dismiss this case reflects a broader issue with respecting Black life and experience. We call on local law enforcement and city leaders to share all information related to this tragedy. We’re also asking local police departments and news outlets to re-evaluate their policies on public responses to sensitive matters.

On behalf of North Carolina Black Alliance and Advance Carolina, we extend our heartfelt condolences to those who lost a loved one this week and/or have otherwise been impacted by this tragedy. In moments like this, we must remember the real difference between intent and impact. Empathy and patience can go a long way.

We’re just under 90 days until the general election, and the administration is still trying to force the SAVE Act on us. This is not business as usual, and we cannot afford to look away.

Don’t be fooled by headlines that make it seem like regular political-ish. Every action taken against our rights and communities moves us further away from the ideals that make American democracy supposedly great.

Mid-decade gerrymandering. Erasure of Black political power. And rollbacks on anti-discrimination policies and segregation-era consent decrees. This administration and its allies have made it clear they will not be satisfied until they have absolute power and control over everything and everyone.

But all is not lost. We know that organized people have always been the antidote to extremist abuse of power. We’ve seen it in history countless times. It’s probably why they don’t want us to know what has happened.

Now more than ever, we need to be locked in and stay informed about what’s happening and what can be done. These next few months will fly by. And Nov. 3 will be here before we know it.
