Walk Day is one of the most meaningful days of the year for the ALS community — and we couldn’t make it happen without our incredible volunteers!

Join ALS United North Carolina on Saturday, October 17, at Long Leaf Park in Wilmington for the 2026 Walk ALS Wilmington!

We’re looking for volunteers to help us create a welcoming, uplifting and memorable morning for individuals and families impacted by ALS. Whether you’re helping with check-in, cheering on walkers, assisting with activities or lending a hand wherever needed, your time makes a difference.

Living with ALS—or caring for someone with ALS—can sometimes feel isolating. ALS United North Carolina can help pALS and cALS connect with others in their local community who are navigating a similar journey.

The ALS community has lost an extraordinary voice with the passing of Brooke Eby. 💔

Through honesty, humor, and courage, Brooke shined a powerful light on ALS and helped countless people better understand the realities of living with this disease.

Her impact reached far beyond her own story. She brought visibility, connection, and compassion to the ALS community, and her voice will continue to resonate.

We know this loss is deeply felt by so many — especially those who saw themselves, their loved ones, or their own ALS journey reflected in Brooke’s story.

At ALS United North Carolina, we are grateful for the legacy she leaves behind and for the awareness she helped create.

We honor her by continuing to support families, raise awareness, and keep the voices of people living with ALS at the center of our mission.

This fall, communities across North Carolina will come together to walk in honor of someone we love, in memory of someone we’ve lost, and in support of everyone living with ALS.

We did it.

The Senate has passed the ACT for ALS Reauthorization Act, completing congressional action and sending the legislation to the President for signature.

This moment belongs to the ALS community. People living with ALS, families, caregivers, advocates, researchers, clinicians, and ALS United member organizations worked for years to help make reauthorization possible.

As a member of ALS United North Carolina was proud to be part of this effort. ALS United members brought more than 50 advocates to Capitol Hill for Hill Day and met with lawmakers in their home districts, while ALS United organized a congressional briefing and met with House and Senate committees throughout the reauthorization process.

Thank you to everyone who shared their experiences, contacted lawmakers, joined advocacy efforts, and helped carry this effort forward.

Together, we got ACT for ALS across the finish line.

Research is creating new possibilities for people living with ALS.
Exciting work from Duke University researchers could help advance the way people with ALS and other neuromotor disorders communicate.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) can translate brain activity into computer-generated speech, offering a potential way for individuals who have lost the ability to speak to communicate. One of the challenges, however, has been the extensive amount of individualized data needed to train these systems for each person.
Researchers at Duke are exploring a new approach: using brain-signal data collected across multiple patients to help train these devices. Their recent study showed that pooling data may be possible, potentially reducing the amount of individual training needed and helping move this technology closer to practical, broader use.

For the ALS community, advances like these represent something incredibly important: the possibility of preserving connection, independence and a person's ability to communicate.
There is still more research to be done, but every discovery brings us another step forward.

At ALS United North Carolina, we are grateful for researchers who continue pushing the boundaries of what is possible for people living with ALS.
