It takes a village, and sometimes that village shows up with a stuffed animal and a hug when it’s needed most. ❤️

Earlier this week, we received a call that reminded us exactly why the Foster Closet exists. A social worker reached out about a family working incredibly hard to stay together, avoiding foster care, while facing the unthinkable: saying goodbye to a mother.

Here is how your support turned a devastating afternoon into a moment of comfort:

* 4:41 PM: The call comes in. “Do you have any stuffed animals?” The social worker needs three for children who are headed to the hospital the next day to say their final goodbyes to their mom.

* 5:02 PM: We realize a stuffed animal is just the start. We gather board games, journals, coloring books, and brand-new toys—anything to offer a tiny spark of hope in a dark time.

* 5:38 PM: The bags are packed and ready. The social worker arrives, gives us a massive hug, and heads to the hospital to meet the father.

The next day, she sent us this note:
“The dad was not expecting anything. I just know the kids will be so happy. The visit was tough last night... Child Welfare is hard, but you make it a little lighter!”

This is the power of our community. Sometimes “support” looks like a complex system, and sometimes it looks like a soft teddy bear to hold onto during a “tough” hospital visit.

Saturday Stories:

At The Foster Closet, we’ve been working hard to build strong relationships with social workers—so we can provide essentials to children before they even arrive at a foster home. Our goal is simple: no child should show up with “nothing.” And we want to ease the burden on families who say “yes” to fostering.

One Saturday morning, I received a text from a social worker:

“I just took custody of 3 kids.”

My immediate response: “What do you need?”

After a few quick messages, we got to work.
Here you see three bags packed with care—each filled with new pajamas, underwear, socks, a coat, toothbrushes, an age-appropriate toy, and a gender-appropriate stuffed animal (because everyone loves a stuffy!). We also included a fully stocked backpack for each child.

Just a few short hours after that text, these bags were delivered to DSS. Now, those kids will enter their next home with their own belongings—hopefully bringing a little comfort to an otherwise difficult day.

This is just ONE of many stories where Wake Foster Closet helps meet needs and bridge gaps in foster care.
