We recorded a song inspired by changes in workplace culture after the 2020 shutdown. Working remotely has provided employees with a type of home field advantage that allows for a new perspective on how they view their jobs. Our video explores the choice between “working to live” or “living to work” and the impact a “9 to 5” existence has on personal identity. Our music video was inspired by Lily Bart, the tragic heroine of Edith Wharton’s 1905 novel The House of Mirth. We set out to give lyrical form to Wharton’s vision of a society “so materialistic and self-serving that it casually destroys what is most beautiful and blameless within it.” In doing so, we found ourselves reflecting on the many tragic female protagonists of classic literature. With that legacy in mind, our song imagines a different future for Lily—a new lease on life and an ending not bound by the literary conventions of the Gilded Age. We are commemorating Memorial Day with a song written by Phil Ochs in 1963 to honor US soldiers who died in WW II. It was also written in hopes that future generations might pay it forward through embracing the values and ideals these soldiers gave their lives to protect. We encourage educators to include our video for Memorial Veterans Day presentations in a variety of social science, humanities, and diversity education courses. Born to be Kind is a song we wrote about human nature and the concept of predestination. Available evidence indicates we are neither a compassionate nor a benign species. Our music video is the philosophical equivalent of rolling a hard six by suggesting we can choose a kinder path. Our song explores the primal need to be rescued from dangerous situations. Specifically, those that cause us to violently turn against one another. The lyrics were inspired by stories and films where rescue comes in the form of benevolent deities, compassionate robots, or intergalactic triage teams.
