Monadnock Farm & Community Coalition

Monadnock Farm & Community Coalition MFCC (Monadnock Grown Coalition) is a 150+ member organization cultivating projects and actions to help build a robust Monadnock local food system in NH.

MFCC is a coalition of both Member Organizations and Individual Members who come together regularly to build a robust, sustainable and viable local food system in the Monadnock Region of New Hampshire. Members meet quarterly to: collaborate; share updates; accomplishments and the latest research; and to create a venue for multi-sector resource sharing and problem-solving in order to meet our colle

ctive goals outlined in our Mission, Vision and Strategic Plan. Members work together in monthly Working Groups to drill down goals identified in quarterly forums and take necessary steps in meeting the needs of our local food system. Since 2012, we've brought together over 1500 stakeholders throughout the Monadnock Region together to collectively build a vibrant food system. www.mfcommunitycoalition.org

Gardens across New Hampshire are starting to grow. Here are a few seasonal reminders from UNH Extension:

Protect yourself from ticks when spending time outdoors by wearing long sleeves, tucking pants into socks, and choosing light-colored clothing to help spot ticks more easily. Treating clothing with permethrin can provide additional protection.

Hold off on planting warm-season vegetables like tomatoes, peppers, squash, and cucumbers until the risk of frost has passed and nighttime temperatures stay above 50Β°F. In New Hampshire, that’s usually mid-to-late May.

Prune spring flowering shrubs like lilac and forsythia soon after they finish blooming. Pruning too early can remove flower buds.

Keep an eye out for invasive plants. Many leaf out earlier than native vegetation, making spring a good time to control them before they go to seed.

Find more seasonal gardening tips at the link in the comments.

πŸ“πŸ“πŸ“THIS SATURDAY, from 2-3 PM: April 25 - Come Hear about Native Americans and their Wild/Native Strawberry Plants. Bring one home for your full sun garden!

Let's Grow at 100 Church Street, Keene, NHπŸ“πŸ“πŸ“πŸ“πŸ“πŸ“

You can come alone but you can also bring a buddy. They don't have to be YOUR children. They can be your neighbor's or your grandchild or your niece/nephew. Small-scale, project gardening is a great activity to make fun memories and discover that we can grow some of our own food at home! Come play with us and grow fun veggies/fruits right in our neighborhood.

⭐🌟⭐🌟City of Keene Compost is Available: If possible, be sure to bring a 5-gallon bucket to bring home FREE compost for your home garden!

BACKGROUND: A small group of us East Siders are volunteering, as you may have heard, to create activities for this tiny green space in our 'hood throughout the summer. Watch for more postings soon.

For this project, a generous East Side Neighbor has donated funds to buy supplies for me to be able to offer six, 1-hour workshops FREE at the 100 Church Street site this spring in Keene, NH.

Next:
May 2 - Let’s Grow Lettuce & Chard, and
May 9 - Let’s Grow Marigold Flowers in a Spiral,
May 16 - Let’s Grow Pie Pumpkins!

No RSVP is needed. We'll hold it in a light shower but not a downpour. No rain dates. Walk if you can because parking is limited. See you soon!
