The Turimiquire Foundation is a USA 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Cambridge, MA., supporting community-based service and environmental projects in the Turimiquire watershed of northeastern Venezuela. Here is the simple and humble story of how we started: http://turimiquire.org/how-we-started/ in 1995 in a small backwater of rural Venezuela. We do not have deep pockets, and depend on the generosity and concern of many people, including friends, family and several Foundations, with donations large and small, to help us realize this work. Over the past 20+ years, an average of 93+ cents of every dollar has gone directly into service delivery to low-income populations.

Alongside our August reproductive health metrics, Turimiquire also carried out a full agenda of humanitarian surgeries and medical assists for families in urgent need. In August, we delivered 14 major surgeries and more than 140 medical assists — from hysterectomies and gallbladder removals to biopsies, medications, lab tests, and transportation support. ✨ At Turimiquire, we believe reproductive freedom belongs to everyone. Recently, three young men ages 22 to 24 chose vasectomy with clarity and confidence. None had children, and each was carefully evaluated before making this decision. They were grateful to exercise their reproductive rights and take responsibility for their futures and their partners.

🩺 In Margarita, our team also performed 17 vasectomies and 10 tubal ligations, with more men than women participating. A meaningful sign of shared responsibility in family planning.

This season’s durian harvest shows the strength and potential of our long-term work in the valley. Our oldest Durian East trees are now more than 30 years old and took nearly 20 years to produce. Their size and resilience reflect decades of care and patience. 🌳🍈

The harvest exceeded 600 fruits and brought in more than $20,000. Most of this income went directly back into the rural community, creating an important and rare cash influx for local families. Although the harvest took place in Durian East, 15 percent of the fruits and seeds were sent to support Durian West, strengthening both sides of the project.

This season also produced a nursery of more than 300 new seedlings that will become the next generation of trees. Each seedling represents future growth for the valley and the families who care for it. 🌱💛

During the harvest season, our campesino partners stay on site day and night to protect and gather the fruit. Their small camp in the valley holds food supplies and a Starlink connection that keeps them in touch with the team. 🌿🍈

This work requires patience, vigilance, and deep knowledge of the land. The durian trees grow in a remote area, and the harvest must be guarded carefully to ensure that the fruit reaches the community that depends on it. 💛🌱

This year’s durian harvest comes from a remote valley that is more than 3 walking hours from the nearest road. The trees here grow tall and strong, rooted in one of the most secluded areas of our region. 🍈🌱

Our campesino partners make the journey into this valley throughout the season, gathering fruit with care and dedication. The remoteness of the land makes the harvest challenging, yet it also reflects the resilience and commitment of the families who steward these trees. 💛🌿

Durian season has arrived in eastern Venezuela and our trees are producing an abundant harvest. This year’s trees are full, and the fruit is coming in strong. The SUV packed with durians shows the scale of the work and the promise of this project. 🍈🌿
