USA collegiate taekwondo continues its strong growth across U.S. college campuses, and the recent tournament hosted by MIT on October 17, 2026, was the perfect example of that momentum.

Oct 6, 2026 -The NCTA is pleased to announce the creation of the NCTA National High School and Middle School Varsity Leagues. The purpose of these leagues is to provide competitive opportunities to scholar athletes during these academic years, offer support to high performing scholars and athletes through scholarships, and create a smooth on-ramp to collegiate taekwondo programs nationwide as they move towards their college years.

Leading this initiative will be the new NCTA National High School Administrator, Master Sunny Woo Park. Master Park will appoint state administrators who will run annual state and regional middle and high school varsity championships, culminating in a national middle and high school championship.

To inaugurate the initiative, a national NCTA High School Championships event was held on June 13, 2026 in Freehold, NJ. The championship awarded $12,000 in scholarships to deserving high school student-athletes. These scholarships reflected the mission of the event: investing in education, building future leaders, and celebrating excellence on and off the competition floor.

“The NCTA National High School Championships is about more than competition,” said Sunny Woo Park of Master Park’s Black Belt America. “It is about investing in the future of our student-athletes. These young men and women represent what taekwondo is truly about: discipline, education, leadership, character, and excellence in life.”

In 2027, middle and high school athletes can look forward to over 15 states that will offer NCTA National High School Varsity League championships, culminating in a National Middle and High School Varsity Championship.

On the third and final day of the FISU America Games competition, the Taekwondo team concluded its record-setting run with 5🥇, 5🥈 and 1🥉 medals for a total of 11🥇, 14🥈 and 5 🥉! The results were the first-ever perfect gold sweep of all poomsae divisions by the USA at a collegiate national team event, along with historic finalist performances by our men's and women's team sparring entrants, who secured two silver medals.

Finally, USA finished first in the taekwondo standings, with Brazil second and Peru third - also the first time for a USA team at the FISU America Games. Congratulations to all athletes, staff, and to their home families, schools and coaches!

Today, members of the US National Collegiate Taekwondo Team will be traveling to Lima, Peru to represent the United States and the National Collegiate Taekwondo Association at the 4th FISU America Games. The FISU America Games feature 14 sports with over 3,000 participants from 19 countries across the Pan American region.

These 32 taekwondo athletes from the United States will compete in both poomsae and sparring sub-disciplines and hail from 30 different colleges and universities across the United States. Each team member is a student athlete that has split their time between their studies and their preparation for the Games.

NCTA President Dan Chuang said, “Each year, the FISU America Games become more and more competitive, and these student athletes have been working hard to represent USA at a high level. We look forward to seeing strong athletes across the board from the Pan American Region. Thank you to our generous hosts here in Peru for putting on a Games of this scale. We look forward to enjoying the athlete village and the competition venue.

Congratulations to Sunghyun Eric Gun on being named the first recipient of the Male Student-Athlete of the Year award as part of our inaugural Gary Cunningham Award series. Eric delivered a standout performance at the FISU World University Summer Games, representing UniUSA with excellence in Taekwondo. Beyond the podium, he set the standard with his leadership, consistency, and competitive excellence — inspiring teammates and elevating the Taekwondo community on the global stage.

The Student-Athlete of the Year award honors one female and one male student-athlete who demonstrate exceptional athletic performance during FISU competition — whether at the Summer, Winter, or FISU America Games. This recognition highlights record-breaking achievements, medal-winning efforts, and athletes who exemplify personal growth, competitive excellence, and the pursuit of athletic achievement on the world stage.

“This award means a lot not just to me, but to the UniUSA team as well as the NCTA. It reflects the hard work, dedication, and sacrifices that our entire staff and team have put in together. Representing UniUSA at the Summer World University Games was an incredible experience, and I’m proud of what we were able to accomplish as a group.”

Wrapping up 2026 NCTA Championships! Over 600 athletes competed on site over three thrilling days April 24-26 at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, including the exciting 3v3 format for poomsae and sparring at the NCTA Cup on the last day.
