We’re excited to introduce you to one of the panelists sharing advice for local journalists at LitArts RI’s Writer as Witness: Cultivating Community Journalism on Sat, Oct 24 from 1-3pm.

LuzJennifer Martinez is a local journalist with five years of reporting experience, four years of technical writing/editing experience, and three years of local news editing experience. She received her BA in English, minor in Communications from Rhode Island College in 2008, and became a freelance reporter for Providence En Espanol newspaper and a staff writer for What's News @ Rhode Island College that same year. ��LuzJennifer holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Emerson College and now serves as Deputy Editor for The Valley Breeze. LuzJennifer has also written for In the Fray Magazine and launched her blog, The Fearless Wordsmith, in 2016. She currently runs local creative writing group Diverse Voices of RI and is a BIPOC Committee Advisory Member at LitArts RI.

About Your Teaching Artist
Sylke Rene Meyer (she/they) is an artist, director, author and Professor of Creative Practice Research at Northeastern University Boston. She previously held professorships in Cologne (ifs) and at California State University Los Angeles (Creative Writing and Critical Making). Her work spans cinema, theater, performance, media art, and public art. Her latest book, Soviet Narratology and Spatial Story Design: The Unintentional Storyteller (Routledge, 2026), reconstructs the genealogy of interactive narrative forms through Soviet narratology and cybernetics.

LitArts RI, in partnership with WomensWork Theatre Collaborative, is proud to participate in Women+ on the Edge of Democracy, a civic initiative activating theatres nationwide to gather in spaces large and small all across the country to listen to plays and participate in a dialogue about Democracy.

The Flynn Center of Burlington, Vermont, commissioned 36 prominent women+ playwrights from around the world to write ten-minute plays or monologues in response to these urgent questions: What is the current state of democracy in America? What can history, global context, or futurism offer us in this pivotal moment?

WomensWork will present readings of 5 pieces selected from the anthology, to be followed by a moderated discussion at LitArts RI on Sun, Oct 25 at 2pm.

Spotlight: Ilhy Gomez Del Campo Rojas is a researcher and rhetorician born in Mexico City whose work revolves around media interpretation and creation, pop culture, and leadership. Coming up: It’s another exciting workshop on offer at LitArts RI’s Nov 14 Writers’ Block Party! Kick off this day of micro-workshops by exploring What Makes a Short Story with teaching artist Jillian Jackson from 10-11:30am that day.

During this workshop, explore the essentials of short fiction through reading, writing and discussions, challenging assumptions about the defining characteristics of the genre. By the end of workshop, you will have a stronger sense of yourself as a writer of short fiction and a deepened appreciation for what short stories can really do.
