NAMI Rhode Island Official page of NAMI Rhode Island state organization

NAMI Rhode Island was founded in 1983 by family members of people with serious mental illness as a grassroots, volunteer organization joined together to improve services for persons who are diagnosed with mental illness. Today we support education, research and other efforts to reduce stigma and discrimination against consumers of mental health services and their families which will finally lead to understanding and cure for this common health disorder.

What People Are Saying:
“The course gave me hope that it will be okay, that I am not alone and reduced a lot of shame, guilt and hopelessness.”

“I wish I’d known about this seven years ago when the problem began. I felt safe in this class. I was able to talk about things I haven’t been comfortable expressing elsewhere.”

“Before I took the course, I felt alone and overwhelmed dealing with my daughter’s mental illness. By taking this course, I have met others who are going through the same things I am and have learned about many resources that I never knew existed.”

“I thought my wife and I knew just about everything there is to know about the system and the illness. Boy, were we wrong. Without a doubt, this is the best support course I have had the privilege of taking part in, bar none.”

Our NAMI Rhode Island Family Support Groups are free, and are led by trained facilitators who also have lived experience as family members themselves. The group meetings last about 1.5 hours, and everyone who participates in the meeting gets a chance to share. The other members of the group try to offer help and resources, when appropriate, based on their own experiences. No pre-registration for family support groups is necessary.

Supporting someone you love can be challenging when you don’t live nearby. But distance doesn’t mean you can’t play a meaningful role in their mental health recovery.

There are many ways to stay connected and offer meaningful support from another city or state — while also respecting your loved one’s independence and taking care of yourself along the way. 💚

NAMI has resources to help you think through what support can look like when you can’t always be there in person.
