Accountability and self-compassion are not opposites.

Guilt can help us recognize harm and make different choices. Shame tells us that we are defined by our worst actions—and that change is impossible.

Through mindfulness, people who are incarcerated can begin to separate what they have done from who they are. This does not excuse harm. It creates space for honest reflection, responsibility, healing, and transformation.

Mindfulness doesn’t necessarily change our circumstances. It can change how we meet them.

For people living in prison, the ability to pause, recognize thoughts and emotions, and see beyond an immediate reaction can create a meaningful kind of inner freedom.

This reflection from a participant in Prison Mindfulness Institute’s correspondence course speaks to that possibility: loosening our grip on how we think things must be can make room for greater clarity, wisdom, and peace.

We’re grateful to the incarcerated men and women who share what they’re discovering through their practice.

✍️ Prison Dharma Press — our publishing imprint, home to titles like Sitting Inside and Dharma in Hell.

🌍 Prison Dharma Network — the global network connecting prison mindfulness organizations, incarcerated practitioners, and volunteers around the world.

🔬 Research — ongoing studies measuring the real-world impact of the Path of Freedom curriculum and its integration with cognitive-behavioral approaches.

⚖️ Mindful Justice Initiative — our conference convening mindfulness teachers and policymakers to explore what system-wide transformation could look like.

Nine programs, one mission: bringing mindfulness and healing into the criminal justice system — for the people inside it and the people who work within it.

"I like this program because it teaches you how to get more peace inside but it also teaches you how to deal with life."

That's how one participant in our Path of Freedom program put it — and honestly, it says everything.

Peace isn't about escaping what's hard. It's about building the steadiness to meet it — the conflicts, the waiting, the uncertainty, all of it. That's what this work is for.

📿 Sunday reflection from inside the walls

Freedom isn't always about open doors. Sometimes it's the quiet decision to pause before reacting, to stay curious instead of shutting down, to choose connection over control.

In our latest post, Rays of Light: Finding Freedom Within Prison Walls, Path of Freedom participants share the small moments that shifted everything. One man, offered a cellmate he didn't want, chose to wait instead of pushing him away — and found unexpected common ground in a shared curiosity about meditation. Another spoke about the hard, necessary work of forgiving himself before he could move forward.

These are the everyday awakenings that mindfulness makes possible: not grand gestures, but real changes in how we meet our lives, wherever we are.

📚 Books Behind Bars Spotlight: Born in Tibet by Chögyam Trungpa

Every book in our eBay store does double duty. When you buy Born in Tibet, you're not just adding a remarkable memoir to your shelf — you're helping send Dharma books to people who are incarcerated.

Trungpa Rinpoche's account of his early years and his escape from Tibet across the Himalayas is a story of resilience, loss, and unwavering commitment to practice under impossible conditions. It's a fitting read for anyone walking a path of freedom from the inside out.

Your purchase directly funds our Books Behind Bars program, which puts contemplative texts into the hands of incarcerated readers who request them — often the only spiritual resource available to them.

🌱 A Sunday evening read.

Behind concrete walls and steel bars, transformation is quietly taking root. In our Path of Freedom classes, men serving time are learning to pause before reacting, to forgive themselves, and to turn toward what's within.

One participant put it this way: "To me, forgiveness is about letting go of resentment so that you can use that energy to move forward in your life… to really fly."

Another, after a particularly heavy class, offered something that has stayed with our facilitator ever since: "No matter what happens, there's always another ray of light that will emerge to show you your next step on the journey."

Freedom, these men remind us, doesn't start with the removal of bars. It starts with awareness, compassion, and the courage to look inward.

Sometimes a letter arrives that reminds us exactly why this work matters. We recently received these words from a federal detainee in Georgia, who found a Path of Freedom workbook left behind by another inmate. We're sharing it with her gratitude and permission in spirit — as an encouragement to everyone inside, and everyone who supports this work.

"I am a federal detainee in Georgia. I found your workbook in another inmate's books that she left behind, and I am so glad I did. It has allowed me to work through several past experiences that I have allowed to have a strong hold on my mind for many years. Instead of being stuck in 'poor pitiful me' mode, or a 'things will never be better' attitude, keeping me in my depression, I have learned to realize that I will be okay, I am not a bad person, only I can control my happiness and the course my life takes from this day forward. This is a learning experience. I will come out of this better than I came in. I will forever be thankful for the knowledge that I have learned while working through your workbook. I am very grateful that you took the time to create the POF project for us, the inmates, especially at a time in our lives when so many of us feel overlooked or forgotten and want to give up. Thank you again for not forgetting about us when most of us are at our very lowest points in our lives."

To everyone inside who feels overlooked or forgotten: you are not. The Path of Freedom is available to incarcerated individuals — reach out to learn how to bring it to your facility.
