In loving memory of Janice Luongo, honored posthumously at our awards event earlier this week.
As the founder and publisher of Street Sights — Rhode Island’s only publication written by and for people experiencing homelessness — Janice created a platform that elevated voices too often ignored and reminded our community of the humanity behind every story.
She believed advocacy meant showing up. Janice walked encampments delivering food, clothing, and essential supplies, organized community support, and challenged policymakers to do more. She never stopped asking the question that became synonymous with her work: “What about tonight?” — a simple but powerful reminder that homelessness is a human crisis demanding action today, not an abstract policy issue.
Janice’s courage, honesty, and relentless commitment inspired advocates, providers, elected officials, and countless Rhode Islanders to see homelessness through a lens of dignity, justice, and hope. She leaves behind a legacy of compassion, action, and an unwavering belief that every person deserves to be seen, heard, and housed.
May we honor her memory by continuing the work she championed and by never losing sight of the people whose voices she worked so tirelessly to amplify.
