2026 marks the 50th year Princeton’s Halloween parade has been sponsored by the Arts Council of Princeton.🎃 On Saturday, October 30, 1976, an estimated 1,000 marchers paraded from the Public Library parking lot, up to Nassau Street, then Moore Street, ending at the High School. The event featured a firetruck, music by local bands, a costume contest, and Halloween movie. At the end of the night, each child was given a candy treat and sent home to await a phone call from a goblin announcing the mystery grand prize.

Curious about lithography? I'm teaching a Pronto plate lithography class at the Arts Council of Princeton in March.

Pronto plates are finished to mimic the texture of traditional litho stones. It's an accessible way to experience the beauty of lithography without the acids, chemicals, or multiple processing steps involved with stone lithography. Simply draw on the paper thin polyester plate, dampen with a sponge, ink, and print!

It's not too early to sign up, seats are limited.

No printmaking experience needed.

"Halloween parades have been part of Princeton life for more than half a century. Archival records trace an annual Halloween parade organized through Princeton Township schools as far back as 1955, when students marched from Valley Road School to Witherspoon Street, Henry Street, Jefferson Road, and ultimately back to Valley Road School. A 1963 account in the Princeton Herald describes a UNICEF Halloween Parade along Nassau Street, led by the Princeton University Band.

The tradition continued to evolve over time, with the parade’s organizers moving between community organizations and sponsors. In 1976, the Arts Council of Princeton stepped in to take up the parade from the Recreation Department and the Chamber of Commerce. The Arts Council rallied an impressive cast of community partners, including local secondary schools, McCarter Theatre, Creative Theatre Unlimited, the Princeton Volunteer Fire Department, Princeton University, and youth groups from PDS, Stuart, Princeton High School and the Middle School."

Our 50th Annual Hometown Halloween Parade is THIS FRIDAY!

And the Princeton University Band is excited to kick off the festivities at 4pm with live music on Palmer Square | Princeton, NJ green. We depart for Greater Somerset County YMCA at 4:30pm and upon arrival, the party continues with a trunk-or-treat.

So get those costumes ready -- we can’t wait to see you & yours there!
