🌊 EPICC Learning in Action! 🚣‍♂️

For our August Fun Friday field trip, LUSI learners headed to Montgomery Whitewater — and this one was the perfect example of what learning at LUSI is all about.

Before hitting the water, our learners got a behind-the-scenes look at the STEM of whitewater rafting. They learned how the facility works, how rapids are created, and how engineering helps turn moving water into a whitewater course.

Then came the best part… they got to experience it for themselves! 🙌

A few EPICC learning moments our learners took away:

🌊 Some of the rapids were modeled after the first Olympic whitewater rapids.
🦺 Life jackets are VERY important in case you fall out of the boat.
👂 Listening to your guide matters if you want everything to go correctly.
🚣 To “surf” the raft, everyone puts their weight toward the front of the boat!

They didn’t just hear about water, force, engineering, teamwork, and safety — they experienced it.

These are the moments we love most: curiosity turning into experience, experience turning into understanding, and a whole lot of fun happening along the way.

🍋🌋🍊🗺️ Last week, our learners explored science and geography through hands-on experiments!

Our Bright Pod created lemon volcanoes, then recorded their observations and answered questions about the chemical reaction they witnessed. Science is even more exciting when it bubbles over!

Our Height Pod tackled a much bigger question: Why is it so difficult to represent Earth accurately on a flat map?

Using an orange peel, they saw firsthand how challenging it is to flatten a spherical surface without stretching, tearing, or distorting it. They also used a flashlight-tilting experiment to explore how the Mercator projection enlarges areas farther from the equator. Finally, they compared and contrasted the Mercator and Goode homolosine projections, discussing what each one represents well—and what gets distorted.

From tiny volcanoes to the shape of the entire world, our learners aren’t just reading about concepts—they’re experimenting, observing, questioning, and discovering for themselves. 💡

Another great day of learning at LUSI! 💙💚

📦 We kicked off the day by handing out Welcome Packets, complete with a personal letter written for each learner and some LUSI swag!

🚢 Our Bright Pod learners practiced their mapping skills using grid coordinates with a classic game of Battleship—because coordinates are a lot more fun when there are ships to sink! 😂

🔬 Our Height Pod explored different careers in science and practiced their own mapping skills, using latitude and longitude coordinates to uncover a secret word.

Different ages, different challenges, and plenty of learning by doing. 🦋

Day 1 is in the books! 🎉

We wrapped up our first day with a little math in action — Monopoly! 🎲💵 Practicing budgeting, making change, strategy, and decision-making…with a little friendly competition mixed in.

Learning doesn’t always have to look like a worksheet. 💙💚
