The Autauga Genealogical Society will meet Sunday, March 15, 2 p.m., at the First Methodist Church in Prattville.

Due to circumstances beyond the control of AGS and that of the speaker, Mollie Smith-Waters, our Sunday program has been postponed. “That Cemetery Lady”, will be our speaker on September 20th.

This Sunday, March 15, we will watch and discuss the video, “Top Seven Genealogy Gems That Keep You Stuck (and how to finally solve them!)” by Lisa Louise Cooke, shown on Lisa Louise Cooke's “Genealogy Gems” podcast.

The meeting room is downstairs in the Education Bldg., Room 104. Park in the south parking lot off South Chestnut Street and enter through the church office entrance at the driveway under the portico. Once in the building take the first hall to the right and then first room on the left.

Visitors are always welcome to attend.

New to on-site history or genealogy research at the Georgia Archives? Start with what you know and build from there.

A few beginner tips that can make your visit easier:

• Start with names, places, and an estimated date range
• Try spelling variations (records are not always consistent)
• Search more than one record type
• Keep track of where each record came from
• Use one record to point you to the next

Planning an on-site visit can also save time. The Georgia Archives allows researchers to view original records on-site during research hours. You can also request records in advance by identifying them in the finding aids and submitting an inquiry through the Ask an Archivist webform: https://www.georgiaarchives.org/research/research_services.

Good program today from Derric Scott of the Chilton County Historical Society on the old roads of Chilton and Old Autauga counties. The main roads followed basically the paths of present day US 82, US 31 and I-65 with some variations. It was interesting and generated lots of discussion.
