On June 12, 1800 the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard was established with the purchase of Fernald/Dennett Island for $5500.00 This price was for 58 acres of land in the middle of the Piscataqua River. The Island had been in the Fernald Family since 1645. In 1794, it became the property of John Fernald. It was then sold to James Sheafe, who sold it to William Dennett.

When Dennett sold the Island to the Government, it only held a few sheds and a two story family house. The map shown is from 1856.

The first submarine, the L-8 was built 117 years later.

This is a great time to visit Albacore Park. The Memorial Garden is in bloom. This is a special place at the park dedicated to the sailors and submarines that are on Eternal Patrol.

On June 7, 1855 the USS Constitution arrived at Portsmouth Navy Yard Portsmouth Naval Shipyard - PNSY for an extensive overhaul. The ship was no longer in use as a warship. She remained there until 1860 when she was moved to the US Naval Academy as a floating classroom.

Special welcome and Thank you to the Lt. Cdr. Robert Porter Family ⚓We appreciate their generous donation of the USS Sea Leopard plank which we proudly display in the Ship's Store.

Lt. Cdr. Porter commissioned the USS Dolphin and he decommissioned the USS Sea Leopard during his time in the Navy. After his passing, his family reached out to Albacore looking for a home for his cherished collection of Naval artifacts. We were happy to add many to Albacore's exhibits and displays which you can also see when you visit Albacore Park.

Thank you to everyone who attended the Memorial Day Ceremony. We brought this event indoors due to the torrential rain but it was a wonderful tribute to our soldiers and sailors who sacrificed for the freedom we have today. 🇺🇸 Never Forget 🇺🇸
