We have bittersweet news. The events of the past 18 months have caused the relocation of some of our core group and made new demands on those of us who remain. We will be continuing our pause from producing theater for the 2021/2022 season. We have left our long time home at The Back Door Theater which we are happy to report will remain a theater space. While we hope this is a hiatus and not a goodbye, it IS the end of an era. We want to acknowledge this moment and thank every individual who worked on Defunkt shows at the Back Door from 2000 to 2020. Most of all thank you to every one of you who came to see our work there: you are in our memory and we hope that those performances will remain in yours.

The adventure continues.

Our friends Common Grounds Coffeehouse are back open for business. They have a delicious assortment of treats and beverages, hot and cold, AND a very cool, well thought out traffic flow plan to keep us all safe. If you are needing a pick me up in SE Portland, visit them and support our local businesses.

Thank you to the Portland Civic Theatre Guild for this generous grant! We will spend the dollars of this grant on needed improvements to our space, but we share the honor of the award with all of the theatres in Portland who are doing the hard work of figuring out how to survive through and learn from the challenging times we face. We will be back.

AND THE WINNERS ARE.....!
The $2,000 Mary Brand Award goes to Miracle Theatre Group to cover the cost of curriculum development and teaching artists training in arts integration instruction in order to create and present workshops for elementary and middle school students, with special training focused on Spanish speaking students, students of color and schools in under-served communities.

The $3,000 Isabella Chappell Award goes to Defunkt Theatre to purchase material to rebuild a new deck which will give the artists who work in their space a better canvas and allow their audiences a more immersive experience. This will also allow them to continue to produce high quality theatre in a safe and workable space.

and finally,

The $5,000 Leslie O. Fulton Fellowship has been awarded to Louanne Moldovan for podcast post production training from a consistent instructor and the purchase of a laptop computer to aid in the successful adaptation and application of sound and video editing.

Congratulations to all our applicants and winners! Watch our website in the coming weeks for interviews with all the award winners.
