This Pet Month, we’re giving a round of ✨appaws✨ to the partners who help our older neighbors care for their beloved pets. With their support, our Pet Program can provide pet food, share helpful resources, and connect participants with trusted care for the pets who bring joy, comfort, and connection to daily life.

Thanks to all of our partners: Serenity Vet Mobile, BluePearl Pet Hospital, Orchards Feed Store, Oregon Humane Society, Peaceful Paws, Portland Veterinary Wellness Center, and Second Chance Companions.

May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and this year’s theme, “Power in Unity: Strengthening Communities Together,” invites us to honor the stories, leadership, traditions, and contributions of AANHPI communities.

AANHPI older adults carry histories shaped by family, culture, migration, caregiving, resilience, joy, and belonging. Their experiences reflect many cultures, languages, journeys, and generations, reminding us that no single story can represent an entire community.

At Meals on Wheels People, we are committed to learning, listening, and showing care in ways that respect each person’s identity, experiences, and sense of community.

We are grateful for the AANHPI older adults, volunteers, staff, and neighbors who help shape our community in lasting ways.

May is Mental Health Month, and at Meals on Wheels People, we believe older adults belong in the conversation.

For some older adults, isolation can mean days without a familiar face, a friendly conversation, or someone checking in to make sure they’re okay. Over time, that lack of connection can affect mental and physical health, increasing the risk of depression, anxiety, heart disease, and stroke. The U.S. Surgeon General has compared its impact to smoking up to 15 ci******es a day.

That’s why connection is woven into the way we serve. For older folks, feeling seen, supported, and remembered can make a meaningful difference in their mental well-being.

A simple check-in can make a real difference, not just during Mental Health Month, but all year long. Volunteer with us: mowp.org/volunteer

Projects like this don’t happen without strong partnerships.

Working alongside Energy Trust of Oregon, Portland General Electric, and City of Portland, OR's Clean Energy Community Benefits Fund (PCEF) enables us to invest in projects that lower costs and support long-term sustainability.

Appreciate Kristin Mueller for putting words to what this means in practice, and grateful to our energy partners for their continued support.

More meals for vulnerable older adults across the Portland area – that’s what a new solar plus battery storage installation means for Meals on Wheels People.

With help from Energy Trust cash incentives, they are on track to save about $23,000 annually. Plus, the solar power stored in the battery prevents food loss during power outages.

¡Feliz Cinco de Mayo!

Today is a day to celebrate with friends, neighbors, and, of course, good food. Many of those meals come from recipes passed down over time by parents, grandparents, and older family members who keep traditions going strong.

Every day, we see how something as simple as sharing a meal or reaching out can help people feel connected.

Who are you sharing a meal with today?

💚💚💚

As Volunteer Appreciation Week wraps up, we’re thinking about all the volunteers we had the joy of sharing with you this week. Each person we featured is part of something bigger: a community that makes our work possible every single day.

To all of our volunteers who deliver, call, care, and more, thank you. You truly are the heart of our organization.💚
