Braking Cycles… the mission is in the name…

Braking Cycles is a nonprofit serving at-risk youth, ages 14-21, who simply need to know their value. Within these celebrated coffee and bike cultures, we invite youth to join this paid apprenticeship, to learn job skills and receive mentorship. If you are interested in hearing more, and/or becoming a part of Braking Cycles, get in touch with us.

Stretching 3,640 miles across America, the TransAmerica Trail is no small feat by bike. That is why it was a no brainer for the Smith family to dedicate their trip to support at-risk youth through programs like the Braking Cycles Coffee and Bike Shop.

Through vocational training and apprenticeship programs at the coffee and bike shop, young people ages 14 to 21 learn real job skills in a safe, professional environment, whether that’s repairing a bike or crafting a latte.

By taking the Penny Per Mile Challenge, your generosity goes directly towards Braking Cycles programs like the Coffee and Bike Shop.

HERE’S HOW TO TAKE PART:

1️⃣ Give (link in bio)
2️⃣ Follow Smith5
3️⃣ Subscribe to our newsletter (link in bio)

And if you’re in the Portland area, come see this program in action. Grab a coffee or get your bike tuned up. Every visit supports the next apprentice’s story.

Because of you, we’ve hit our $10,000 giving goal for the Smith Family Penny Per Mile Challenge! 🎉 Every mile the Smith Family pedals along the TransAmerican Trail is still a reminder that showing up — one small, faithful step at a time — is how real transformation happens.

With their commitment to raise funds for Braking Cycles along the way, every dollar is going towards vital programs for at-risk youth in the greater Portland/Vancouver area.

Now we’re setting our sights on the next goal: $15,000 by the end of August. 🙌 Will you help us get there? Visit our link in bio! ❤️

Every mile of the Smith Family’s TransAmerica ride has a story behind it. 🤍

It starts with Craig Smith’s employee, Lauren Hutchinson, and her four years as a Faithful Friends mentor to a girl named Za’laysha.

Craig watched that relationship grow, and when it came time for his family to choose a cause worth riding 3,640 miles for, the answer was already in front of him.

Inspired by Lauren and Laysha’s story, the Smith Family set out to support Braking Cycles’ mentorship, vocational, and housing programs for at-risk youth, and they’ve already raised over $7,000 along the way.

Help us reach our next goal of $10,000 by the end of August, so more kids like Laysha can get the support they need to thrive.
