Here's a beautiful example of our Welcome Lesson at the beginning of the school year. Students tasted the fall bounty while caring for the plants. They partnered up to do their scavenger hunt (counting beds, checking temperature, drawing bees and flowers, etc). Their Garden Educator taught the ASL sign for "Welcome" and cut up lemon cucumbers for them to taste while reorienting them to the garden.
A few students said:
-- "That was my first ever cucumber in my life!"
-- "I took a seed from the cucumber to plan in my garden at home."
-- "I can't wait for next month when we taste apples!"

A class of curious 1st graders explored the garden last week with Kelsi, their Garden Educator. They were super curious and engaged as they planted fava beans, sorted seeds, explored the garden with a scavenger hunt, and eagerly tasted and smelled plants.

Mutual care and reciprocity between humans and the garden are part of our core values and pedagogy. It's lovely to see students share about it in their own words!
