We had an awesome Trails work party with Portland Parks & Recreation yesterday! 8 volunteers joined FPC and PP&R staff to remove about 18 rotted posts, install 23 new posts, and add 42 fresh rails to the split-rail fencing on the Wildwood Trail. Repairing and improving the split-rail in this area keeps trail users safer and helps prevent switch-back cutting, which kills native plants, causes slope erosion, and worsens drainage problems. Thank you to our awesome volunteers and PP&R for your hard work!

Thank you to everyone who showed up for the rally in front of City Hall today! Our team was incredibly happy to see the outpouring of support for Forest Park. The fight to defend Forest Park and prevent the cutting of 4.7 acres of trees is far from over, and we can win with your help.

The hearing on PGE's reapplication is in less than one hour! If you haven't sent testimony, we urge you to do so ASAP to ensure your comments get into the record. Carole Hardy, FPC Board Member and Forest Ecologist, recently went to Forest Park with our Executive Director, Trevor Kaul, to discuss some of the threats and issues posed by PGE's reapplication to remove 4.7 trees in Forest Park. A reapplication which, if approved, would set dangerous precedent by allowing development in direct opposition to the Forest Park Natural Resources Management Plan.

The hearing on this application is tomorrow, if you haven't already submitted testimony please do so today! Tomorrow, we also want to invite you to rally with us, and other partner organizations, at City Hall and attend a hearing watch party at 350PDX's Climate Justice Warehouse. Attention volunteers! We need your help this month to remove invasive English ivy in Forest Park and Marquam Nature Park. English ivy is one of the biggest threats to our forests as it can choke out trees, overtake native plant species, and increase the risk for wildfires.

If you want to help us take on the threat of English ivy, you can join us at a few volunteer work parties this month! We need more volunteers to join us for two upcoming work parties on Saturday October 3rd and Saturday October 10th. Last week, employees from KEEN volunteered with us to help pull English ivy in Forest Park and decorate thank-you cards for our donors!

In total, 94 KEEN employees joined us off and on the trails. Together, they removed 5,000 square feet of English ivy in Forest Park, freed 7 trees from ivy, and decorated 161 thank-you cards!

A hearing on PGE's reapplication, the previous version of which was appealed 12-0 by City Council, has been scheduled for October 14th. If approved, this would give PGE the go-ahead to remove 4.7 acres of trees from Forest Park, among other ecological harms. On top of that, the City Administrator has already tasked City Staff to write a report recommending the application's approval, jeopardizing the integrity of the approval process.

If you would like to help us defend Forest Park, you can submit testimony to the city Hearings Officer and rally with us, and other local organizations, at City Hall on the morning of October 14th. Save the date! We will be at City Hall on October 14th at 8:45 to rally for Forest Park and to let City Council know that we oppose PGE's plans to cut hundreds of trees in Forest Park, a move that goes against the Forest Park Natural Resources Management Plan.

🌲 Update on the fight to protect Forest Park

Last year, Portland City Council unanimously denied Portland General Electric’s permit to build a power line through Forest Park. PGE appealed that decision, and Crag attorneys joined Bird Alliance of Oregon, Forest Park Conservancy, and Forest Park Neighborhood Association in defending the City’s decision before the Oregon Land Use Board of Appeals.

Since then, our clients, PGE, and the City of Portland engaged in mediation in an effort to find a resolution that would protect Forest Park. Unfortunately, the City and PGE ultimately reached an agreement without our clients that would allow PGE to seek a new permit to log five acres in Forest Park, with the City’s support.

In response, our clients scheduled a rally at Portland City Hall on October 14, to which all are invited.

The rally will be an opportunity for community members to learn more and show their support for protecting Forest Park, its wildlife, wetlands, and ancient trees.

National Public Lands Day is less than a month away! To celebrate our favorite parks, we will be hosting volunteer work parties in Forest Park and Marquam Nature Park on National Public Lands Day (Saturday, September 26th).

We will be removing invasive plants, like English ivy, from the forest to help restore the local ecosystem, saving trees and creating space for native plants to thrive.
