This week’s takes us into the Cummins Creek Wilderness in the heart of Oregon’s Coast Range ecoregion — a landscape shaped by ocean air, steep forested ridges, and some of the wettest conditions in the state. The Cummins Ridge Trail climbs through old-growth Sitka spruce, western hemlock, and Douglas-fir, offering a glimpse into the only old-growth Sitka spruce forest in Oregon’s Wilderness system. Along the way, salmon and steelhead streams wind toward the Pacific, while summer wildflowers brighten the lush green forest. Take action to protect places like this at the link in our bio.

Happy Wilderness Wednesday! Relaxing at an alpine lake in the Diamond Peak Wilderness, where the frozen surface of the lake leads to the glacial slopes of Diamond Peak in the distance. Shaped by ancient volcanic forces and carved by ice, this quiet corner of the Deschutes National Forest is a reminder of the stillness — and resilience — of Oregon’s wild places. Happy Wilderness Wednesday! Hiking beneath the glaciers of Mount Hood — Oregon’s tallest peak at 11,240 feet — means crossing alpine meadows, rushing glacial creeks and forested slopes shaped by fire, snow and volcanic forces over millions of years. From towering Douglas-firs to the rocky ridgelines that pikas and marmots call home, this corner of the West Cascades ecoregion reminds us why protecting Oregon’s wild places matters.
