September is Attendance Awareness Month! As part of a focus on student attendance in Centennial School District, The Shadow Project provides on-site trainings for teachers and staff and also engages students in direct learning through the work of reading mentors.

These efforts not only contribute to the development of students reading skills, but have also been shown to increase students sense of belonging, which can help to improve attendance.

Thank you to New Relic for packing Summer Goal Setting incentive bundles! Our participants have been working hard for the last 6 weeks and they are waiting for these fun prizes to arrive so they can celebrate all of the progress they made over the summer. Each package, just like each goal they set during the summer, is completely custom to that child. We can't wait for them to be delivered!

As we wrap up Summer Goal Setting for 2026, we’re celebrating the progress our students made along the way!

Sophie kept track of and worked toward her goals for 6 straight weeks and accomplished a lot. Her goals ranged from working on ballet to having less tablet time to helping around the house. One strategy she used to meet her goal of less screen time was playing with her toys and doing other crafts. She reported feeling satisfied and proud of her progress and earned lots of Shadow Bucks!

Here’s to celebrating progress, big and small, all summer long. Way to go, Sophie!

Our mentors meet weekly with students in the Centenniel School District (East Portland / Gresham), motivating them to set and achieve weekly reading goals using an extensive audiobook library.
