Portland Children's Levy recently awarded $8 million in grants to support community-based organizations. A set of 12 new small grants totaling $2.6 million will provide after school academic support, early childhood visits, farm-based education and food, and a variety of mentoring activities. The council will consider approval of Allocation Committee funding decisions for a set of 12 small grants and an 8% increase to the three-year funding of current large grants for use in fiscal years 2027 and 2028. The new Youth Introductory Class includes three sessions, each two hours long. This Empowerment Self-Defense (ESD) class introduces youth to a range of self-protection strategies through a discussion-based, student-centered approach. Participants will identify risks, assess their strengths, and explore options for responding to potential violence.

Topics include trusting and using intuition; understanding how bias affects judgment; setting and maintaining boundaries; assertive communication; evaluating the benefits and risks of escape options; healthy relationships and consent; and physical self-defense strikes and escapes.

Classes are open to youth ages 11–14. Participants may attend on their own or with a woman-identifying or nonbinary adult who is comfortable in a space that centers the experiences of girls and LGBTQIA2S+ communities. Snacks are provided.
