"Portlanders submitted 78,743 signatures to put this on the ballot, the most ever for a city initiative. This year, after hours of council debate, the final budget looked much like the mayor’s first draft. Two cents on the dollar is not a power grab. They aren't Republicans. Some of their donors are. 128 donors to Portland's business-backed candidates also gave to Republicans. Among the progressive councilors running against them: zero.

Oh no, the horror!

Good press on the Fair Share Tax, proposed by Councilor Mitch Green and Councilor Angelita Morillo, which would raise the existing surtax on corporations that pay their CEOs outsized salaries. At it's heart, this policy is about economic justice.

“The city has been facing challenging budget environments, and we as city employees have been fighting for fair compensation,” said City of Portland Professional Union treasurer Chris Gustafson, speaking in favor. “It would be thrilling if we could avoid having a third year in a row undergoing a strike authorization vote.”
