Kenton is a neighborhood in the north section of Portland, Oregon, United States. The Columbia Slough passes through Kenton. Johns to the west.

The Kenton Neighborhood Association (KNA) works in collaboration with neighbors and community partners to foster a clean, healthy, safe, livable, and resilient neighborhood for all. The neighborhood was founded in 1911 as a company town for the Swift Meat Packing Company, & later annexed by Portland. Kenton's northern border is formed by North Portland Harbor, the channel of the Columbia River that separates the area from Hayden Island. Kenton's eastern boundary is Interstate 5 & the neighborhood's southern edge is defined by North Lombard Street. The western border follows North Portland Road, North Columbia Boulevard, & North Chautauqua Boulevard. Neighborhoods bordering Kenton are: Hayden Island to the north; Bridgeton, Sunderland, & Piedmont to the east; Arbor Lodge to the south; University Park to the southwest; & Portsmouth & St. Kenton is home to the Portland International Raceway & the Portland Metropolitan Expo Center. The historic site of Vanport City, a public housing project built to provide homes for World War II shipbuilders, & later destroyed by a 1948 flood, is also located within the current boundaries of the Kenton neighborhood.

Portland Public Schools released a proposal on October 5th to close and combine schools across the district. Peninsula Elementary, our neighborhood school, is on the closure list in both versions of the plan. Under the proposal, Peninsula students would move to Rosa Parks Elementary starting in Fall 2027.

This is a proposal, not a final decision, and the PPS School Board is expected to vote in December.

Concerned about the proposal? It's on the agenda for tonight's PPS School Board meeting.

Where: PPS district office, 501 N Dixon St, or watch live on the PPS YouTube channel

Several groups concerned with the proposal are participating in a rally before the board meeting starting at 5pm in front of the PPS district office.

We encourage neighbors to get informed and share their thoughts before the December vote.

Join us at the Kenton Firehouse this Sunday, October 4th, 10am-1pm for the Native Plant Fair!

🌿 Take home native plants to bring beauty and healthy habitat to your yard. The RSVP form will close on Saturday, October 3rd, at 12pm, or when all plants have been reserved. We have some extras, so if you already requested plants, you can add a tree or shrub by making a new reservation.

Starting at 10am, any unreserved plants will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis. Unclaimed plants will be given away starting at 1pm.

💡 Get planting and gardening tips, learn about pollinators and native ecology, pick up cool swag, and have fun with art activities.

🧪 Bring garden soil, paint chips, toys, and pottery for free lead testing.

Garden soil, toys, paint chips, and pottery may contain lead that is harmful to you and your family. In partnership with County Health Department we’re providing FREE lead testing at our Native Plant Fair event.

🗓️ Sunday, October 4
⏰ 10am-1pm
📍 Kenton Firehouse, 8105 N Brandon Ave

✅ Bring soil, toys, pottery, and paint chips (limit 3 items per household)
✅ Collect 1/2 cup of soil from about six inches below the surface — let the soil dry completely, then place it in a small, labeled ziplock bag
✅ Place paint chips in a sealable container or bag

Kenton neighbors pedaled together for the end of Summer Community bike ride, and it was a blast! 🚲

14 neighbors came out to ride, roll, and soak up the last stretch of summer together. Thanks to peterbrewhaha for organizing!

Free native trees and shrubs are still available! 🌳

We still have lots of native trees and large shrubs ready for a new home in Kenton yards. Reserve yours online and pick it up at our Native Plant Fair.

🌿 Cascara: An exceptional native yard tree with a small, attractive stature and three-season interest.
🌿 Pacific Ninebark: A large deciduous shrub with an attractive full form, named for its reddish peeling bark.
🌿 Osoberry: One of the first native shrubs to bloom each year, with drooping clusters of white flowers in late winter and small plum-like fruit that birds love.
🌿 Black Twinberry: A member of the honeysuckle family, forming a beautifully arching, tall and wide upright shrub.
