Freedom came late — June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth is the reminder that liberation delayed is liberation still owed, and still built.
For 81 years, the Urban League of Portland has carried that work forward: organizing, housing, teaching, and standing with Black communities across Oregon and SW Washington. Today we celebrate. Tomorrow we keep rising.
Happy Juneteenth, Portland. 🤎

For many people, the Urban League is the event they attended, the fashion show they loved, the career fair they visited, or the post they happened to scroll past.

But the truth is, the work goes much deeper.

Every day, we’re helping people build careers, find stability, invest in young people and families, advocate for change, and create pathways toward a stronger future.

This is what your Urban League does.

And none of it happens alone.

If you’ve ever wondered what membership means, this is it. It’s showing up for one another. It’s investing in possibility. It’s believing that stronger communities don’t happen by accident.

Thank you for being part of the story.

Sometimes the next opportunity starts with a conversation.

Today, we’re proud to partner with organizations across our community for Pathways & Possibilities: Level Up – Life, Work, and Wellness, a space designed to connect people with resources, information, and support around employment, housing, health, and financial wellness.

Whether you’re looking for your next step, have questions about available resources, or simply want to learn more about what’s out there, this event is for you.

Because building stronger communities means making sure people know where to turn when they need support.

We hope to see you there.

The Urban League of Portland celebrates the life, leadership, and service of Dr. Darryl S. Tukufu.

A lifelong leader in the Urban League Movement, Dr. Tukufu spent his career working to advance the causes of equality, justice, and inclusion. A celebrated sociologist, theologian, and Pan-African scholar, Dr. Tukufu led the Urban League of Portland from 1990-1993. He grounded the organization during a time of transition, and helped guide ULPDX to a period of sustained success. Dr. Tukufu was a trusted leader who also helped guide other Urban Leagues around the country, including as President & CEO of the Urban League of Memphis. He began his career as Deputy Director of the Warren-Youngstown Urban League.

ULPDX President & CEO Nkenge Harmon issued the following statement after learning the passing of Dr. Tukufu:

“Let us all reflect on the life of Dr. Darryl Tukufu, a leader and mentor to many – including myself. Dr. Tukufu’s life is a shining example of what can be achieved through service, wisdom, and inspiration. He was my friend and someone who helped guide me during key moments, and I am forever grateful for all he gave me, the city of Portland, and his adopted state of Oregon. We are all so much better off for the life he lived. Let us also keep his wife Myra in our thoughts as she plans Dr. Tukufu’s Homecoming services.”

Pride Month is about more than celebration.

It’s about belonging.

Everyone deserves the opportunity to live safely, pursue their goals, build a career, find stable housing, access healthcare, and be treated with dignity.

For many LGBTQ+ people, and particularly Black LGBTQ+ people, those opportunities have not always been equally accessible.

That’s one reason Pride Month matters.

This month, we celebrate the LGBTQ+ community, honor those who fought to expand opportunity and acceptance, and recommit ourselves to building communities where everyone has the chance to thrive.

Because when more people belong, stronger communities are possible.

Happy Pride Month. 🌈

One conversation can open a door.

At this year’s 41st Annual Career Connections Job Fair, Anthony shared what the day meant for him: access to employers, encouragement, direction, and a real lead toward an interview.

That’s why events like this matter.

They create space for people to ask questions, build confidence, explore career paths, and take the next step toward opportunity.

Thank you again to every employer, volunteer, sponsor, partner, and job seeker who helped make this year’s Job Fair our largest yet.
