A celebrated sociologist, theologian, and Pan-African scholar, Dr. Tukufu led the Urban League of Portland from 1990-1993. He grounded the organization during a time of transition, and helped guide ULPDX to a period of sustained success. Dr. Tukufu was a trusted leader who also helped guide other Urban Leagues around the country, including as President & CEO of the Urban League of Memphis. He began his career as Deputy Director of the Warren-Youngstown Urban League.
ULPDX President & CEO Nkenge Harmon issued the following statement after learning the passing of Dr. Tukufu:
“Let us all reflect on the life of Dr. Darryl Tukufu, a leader and mentor to many – including myself. Dr. Tukufu’s life is a shining example of what can be achieved through service, wisdom, and inspiration. He was my friend and someone who helped guide me during key moments, and I am forever grateful for all he gave me, the city of Portland, and his adopted state of Oregon. We are all so much better off for the life he lived. Let us also keep his wife Myra in our thoughts as she plans Dr. Tukufu’s Homecoming services.”
