UPDATE 2026-10-05
Recap: Back at the beginning of May, William, the spouse of our president & resident therapist Michele, was in a bad car wreck that totaled the car and broke his hip. While in hospital getting their hip checked out, it was discovered that their heart was not functioning well. Since then the Parham family has been on a journey and required much community support to keep going.

After another emergency trip to & stay in the hospital, tests, med tweaks, and follow-ups, it was decided that William would need to get an internal defibrillator. William finally has a date for surgery - October 22nd. Afterwards, they will have an additional 4-6 weeks recovery before he can finally start back to work with short shifts & light duty in mid-December.

We're here to ask folks to continue with their generosity in helping Michele's family as they all navigate this journey. Share this update; send prayers, vibes, & dollars; or porch drop a meal or two.

Ìyá Pittsburgh Project's Executive Director, Traditional Community Midwife Selena Jackson (they/them), appeared on the podcast Glow Your Influence. They spoke on essential pieces of the conversation about perinatal health for Black birthing people in Pittsburgh and beyond in the podcast episode titled, When Care Isn't Equal: Black Women, Birth, & The Fight to be Heard

"What happens when the care you receive depends on who you are, who is standing beside you, or whether someone is willing to listen?

In this special episode of Glow Your Influence, Corey Lakins sits down with Mariah Peoples, Larissa Keys, and community midwife Selena Jackson for a deeply personal conversation about Black maternal health, informed consent, medical advocacy, birth trauma, grief, and unequal experiences within the healthcare system."

Our Oct/Nov 2026 book will be Still Alice by Lisa Genova.

Through the story of Alice Howland, a 50-year-old professor diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's, we will explore the profound ethical questions around identity, patient autonomy, informed consent, and quality of life as cognitive decline progresses. Whether you come from a healthcare background or are just interested in the intersection of medicine and ethics, all perspectives are welcome!

bit.ly/IYABOOKCLUB

Our Jan/Feb 2027 book will be Five Days at Memorial: Life and Death in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital by Sheri Fink.

Grounded in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the gripping investigative account examines the moral, medical, and legal crises that unfolded when power failed at a flooded New Orleans hospital. We will explore crucial ethical questions around disaster triage, resource allocation under extreme stress, medical euthanasia versus palliative care, and institutional accountability. All perspectives are welcome!
