Queue Movin’ Out by Billy Joel, Carla and Ecco’s four chicks have officially fledged the nest! Each of the birds took turns alongside the edge of the nest box (nestrail), stretching and flapping (exercising) their wings, preparing themselves for their big “leap!”
They aren’t officially “Movin’ Out” just yet; they will remain in their parents’ territories for a few more weeks to master the art of flying and hunting before heading out on their own adventure! We will be able to track their next moves thanks to their recent banding by a biologist from the Pennsylvania Game Commission, with support from the University of Pittsburgh and the National Aviary. Whether they remain local or move to another bridge, cliff, or skyscraper rooftop in Pennsylvania or another nearby state, we should be able to tell where they end up, when they mate, and if they are surviving and thriving in their new homes.
Although the juveniles will now spend more time off-camera, you might still catch a glimpse of mom and dad on our live stream: https://www.aviary.org/birds-habitats/live-streams/
