Not every bird has a fierce name like Dariéna😏🤘

National Aviary friends, Brian and Sandra Moroney, graciously dubbed our new Harpy Eagle through our Name-A-Bird program.

“She is named in memory of Sergio Seipke, a former Hawk Mountain trainee. In the early 2000’s, he led us on an unforgettable birding trip throughout the Darién Province of Panama, and after combining those two words, we knew we had the perfect name for this beautiful eagle.”

Dariéna now serves as an important ambassador for Harpy Eagles and other raptor species whose populations are declining in the wild due to human activity such as deforestation and pesticide usage.

We want to know, have you visited to see this “Remarkable Raptor” yet?! 👇

Queue Movin’ Out by Billy Joel, Carla and Ecco’s four chicks have officially fledged the nest! Each of the birds took turns alongside the edge of the nest box (nestrail), stretching and flapping (exercising) their wings, preparing themselves for their big “leap!”

They aren’t officially “Movin’ Out” just yet; they will remain in their parents’ territories for a few more weeks to master the art of flying and hunting before heading out on their own adventure! We will be able to track their next moves thanks to their recent banding by a biologist from the Pennsylvania Game Commission, with support from the University of Pittsburgh and the National Aviary. Whether they remain local or move to another bridge, cliff, or skyscraper rooftop in Pennsylvania or another nearby state, we should be able to tell where they end up, when they mate, and if they are surviving and thriving in their new homes.

Although the juveniles will now spend more time off-camera, you might still catch a glimpse of mom and dad on our live stream: https://www.aviary.org/birds-habitats/live-streams/

This is right after we told Bubba it’s National Bubba Day (it’s real, look it up). Very on brand for Wookiee to just snooze right through it! 😜

From candling the egg to unveiling a chick: the National Aviary is excited to announce the hatching AND fledging of a MALE Guam Kingfisher (known in Guam as sihek). Our first sihek of 2026 hatched on April 19 and took his first flight on May 27. This little one will join the Sihek Recovery Program efforts to continue growing this Extinct-in-the-Wild population under human care.

Follow along for future updates, including details on the role our very own Senior Aviculturist, Brianna Crane, will play in Sihek Recovery Program efforts this fall!

Have you ever heard (or saw!) a bird and thought…hmmm, I wonder what kind of bird that is? 🤔

Learn about birding basics from an Aviary expert, meet an Animal Ambassador, and practice looking high in the tree canopies of our expansive, free-flight habitats.

Then put your newfound skills to the test as you explore Frick Park! An Aviary expert will share more about the species you see fluttering from tree to tree and provide “field tips” for bird identification.
