Allies for Children builds alliances and serves as a bold voice for policy and practice changes that improve the wellbeing of all children and youth in Allegheny County. Our Vision
Each child has the opportunities and assistance necessary to develop into a healthy, educated and contributing member of the community. Our Mission
Allies for Children builds alliances and serves as a bold voice for pol

icy and practice changes that improve the wellbeing of all children and youth in Allegheny County. Our Guiding Principles
Be a voice for children: Make our work putting the needs and interests of children at the center of policy discussions. Use data and evidence: Ensure that public policy recommendations are based on the best available evidence to strengthen validity. Work with all stakeholders in a respectful manner: Acknowledge the unique capacity each individual or group brings to the table and listen carefully to understand unique points of view. Lead only when it is strategic: Follow when others are already effectively advancing the desired policy change. Operate in a non-partisan manner: All policymakers, regardless of political affiliation, value children and have a role in advancing public policy. Recognize alliances are about influence: Work in alliance to exercise influence and not dictate. Work in a collaborative manner: Value those who came before us for their important contributions and join with them to make change. Build, don’t burn bridges: Today’s opponent may be tomorrow’s ally. Be passionate but never strident: Relationships are critical to advancing change. Reach for high goals and take risks, but remain pragmatic: Understand that policy change is a long process with many steps, including setbacks and gains, and unexpected twists along the way. Be accretive: Add value to the dialogue about children, rather than duplicating the good work of others. We are a proud United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania Impact Fund Award for Excellence recipient.

Heather had the opportunity to meet with Curtis Miller and Jahi Jackson at HEIRS Barbershop, where the business is built on a foundation of community, mentorship, and mental health. Read about their goals and community impact in our new blog:

I first met Jahi Jackson at Manchester Academic Charter School (MACS) where he was cutting a student’s hair. I was interested because I believe when young people look good, they feel good—and that confidence can make a big difference in their mental health.

Allies for Children was honored to join our partners in the Thriving PA Coalition in Harrisburg today to raise visibility for Early Intervention.

PA’s Infants and Toddlers and their families deserve timely, quality services, and the providers who serve them deserve to be fairly compensated. A recent rate study found Infant/Toddler EI is underfunded by nearly 40%. We need sustained investment, starting with a $14 million increase in this year’s state budget. Please contact your PA legislators and ask them to support Infant/Toddler EI. https://tinyurl.com/mptrkj89

Allies for Children knows that childcare is an essential policy issue for children and families to thrive. Although we don’t participate in the Start Strong campaign, AFC stands alongside our partners, such as PennAEYC Pennsylvania Association for the Education of Young Children, who lead this important child care advocacy work in Pennsylvania.

Last week, Allies for Children was honored to join Senator Devlin Robinson and other advocates for the Family Care Act (FCA) for a tour of the Women's Center & Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh. Along with organizations such as Women and Girls Foundation, Healthy Start, Inc. Pittsburgh/Allegheny County, YWCA Greater Pittsburgh, and Standing Firm, we had the opportunity to discuss with Sen. Robinson how the FCA would support the populations we serve.

The FCA:
- Allows family members to provide critical care and rehab services to elderly loved ones
at home, without risking their jobs and financial security.
- Grants parents the ability to care for their son or daughter who is recovering from a
serious illness.
- Allows workers to care for themselves following a major surgery or illness.
- Grants new moms and dads the chance to be there for the critical period following the
birth or adoption of a child.
- Allows victims of violence to take care of themselves and their families (Safe Leave).

Thank you to Sen. Robinson and everyone who was able to attend the event last week! To learn more about the Family Care Act, visit www.familycareact.com
