He was 15 years old, and he used his own body as a shield.

On February 14, 2018, a gunman opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Seventeen people were killed. In one classroom, a student named Anthony Borges did something most adults would never be asked to do. He pushed himself against the classroom door to keep it closed while the attacker fired through it.

Anthony is credited with protecting about 20 students inside that room. He was hit five times. Three bullets struck his legs and two struck his lungs. Doctors removed part of one lung, and one bullet came dangerously close to his liver.

Here is what the original post did not say. Anthony needed nine surgeries, and he was the last survivor of the Parkland shooting to be released from the hospital. Classmates nicknamed him "the real Ironman."

He survived, but the recovery was long and painful, and he still carries the scars. His story is one of the clearest examples of courage to come out of one of the worst days in American school history.
