At the center of every Lao table sits a small basket of sticky rice alongside a tiny bowl of jeow. Jeow is the funky, fiery paste that brings heat, pungency, and life to our meals. More than just a condiment, jeow is the very heart of Lao cuisine. Born from a culture of farming, fishing, and foraging, a humble meal of sticky rice and jeow becomes something deeply festive: simple, bold, and communal.

Every Lao family has their own favorite jeow, shaped by memory, region, and tradition. Here at Little Lao, we’ve begun gathering some of our own family recipes to build a growing library of jeow. If your favorite jeow is not yet part of our archive, please tell us — or even better, teach us.

The kind of crossover we love to see: two cuisines, one neighborhood, and good vibes, all under one roof. A lunch celebration in Olney with Breaking Bread, building community across Philly one shared meal at a time ahead of America’s 250th. We love to see it. Khop jai lai lai & mucho gracias to for catering the delicious food, to Vicki and Wat Lao North Philly for hosting, and Welcoming Center for including Laos In The House.

What an incredible evening for Chef ’s cookbook release and talk in Philly! Special thanks to for hosting (still a few copies left, some signed so hurry and get yours), for catering the yummy Lao snacks and for moderating the talk. We’re grateful to those who got tickets & came out (we see you Chef 👀), apparently our stop on the book tour was the first to sell out! Congrats to Saeng on ALL of your success!

🍚 Tip Khao, the Sticky Rice Basket, has been chosen as the Lao National Museum’s first-ever official mascot, securing 44 percent of approximately 460 votes cast online.

Four characters competed in the public vote held 9 to 19 April, the White Elephant, the Star-Shaped Stone, the Khaen Lao, and the Sticky Rice Basket.

Sticky rice is at the heart of Lao identity, the nation’s staple food since the Lane Xang Kingdom era. The traditional basket used for storing sticky rice, the very artifact that inspired the mascot, has always been an essential and cherished item on the Lao dining table.
