It would be difficult to find three works that appear more disparate than these by Nancy Jakubowski, Jan Goldstein, and Julia Zhang, yet they are all made of clay and are hand built. Nancy added acrylic paint to her wall work, Jan added crushed brick to her piece, and Julia's work sits on a pedestal. They are on view through this Saturday at the Mansion at Strathmore.

Alison Sigethy: These kinetic sculptures are oil-filled glass cylinders I call Sea Cores. The name and shape are loosely based on core samples scientists take to study the ocean, but I make no attempt to represent any known sea life. Instead, I invent my own inhabitants for these magical worlds.

There are two fascinating glass sculptures by Andrew Lang in this year's Biennial.
"I fashion dichroic blown glass using centuries-old methodologies combined with space age finishes. My goal is to create objects that both intrigue and delight.
While the body of each of my pieces is little more than sand, the surface is a true wonder of technology.
Dichroic glass (dichro) is a multi layer coating of quartz crystals and metal oxides deposited on glass. The process takes place in a vacuum deposition chamber that relies on an electron beam gun to vaporize the crystals and metal oxides. The resulting surfaces can be produced in thousands of permutations, each of highly reflective saturated color, frequently in complex patterns. The coating is approximately one 35th of a millionth of an inch thick!
It is only in the last several decades that dichro has become widely available. Like most artists who use dichro I began with small pieces as highlights. However, over a period of months, the dichro began to take over larger and larger portions of the surfaces of pieces, to the point that now I try always to produce pieces entirely covered in dichro.
The end result is a single unit, but the shape of the body will undoubtedly have a profound effect on the surface characteristics, especially the sparkle, of the glass."

These three artists—Ellen Krieger, Silvia Souza, and Alice Kresse—use unconventional techniques and materials to form their jewelry. Krieger's process involves a complex web of silver, enamel, and 24kt gold foil. Souza's work is made with leather-like paper, paint, embossing powders, and thread. And Kresse's work is made with paper, silver, and steel.

There are three of David Bunk's raku pieces in the exhibition, and the first one shown here, Eau de Copper, was awarded Excellence in Ceramic by the Washington Ceramic Guild.
