Mentor Leaders Produce Mentor Leaders

Mentor Leaders Produce Mentor Leaders Mentor Leaders is for young men ages 9-14. Mentoring sessions and discussion include current events, anger management, self-esteem and peer pressure.

My name is Vince Garrett but I’m known to my students as Mr.G. I’m a teacher at Mastery Charter School, which is located in a tough North Philadelphia neighborhood. Growing up as a young male outside of my mother, I didn’t have a role model. The problem I see in today’s community is the lack of positive role models in society. I asked two of my mentee students who do they look up to? Both answers

were I don’t know. The typical answers I receive from this question are either athletes or rappers. I believe that it is necessary for young men to have hands on role models. These young men would benefit from additional guidance and support. I’m raising 5,000 for a 12 or 15 passenger van for my mentoring program. Currently renting a 12 or 15 passenger van cost $190.50 a day after taxes $247.05. A passenger could allow me to take mentees on college tours which require transportation! Summer time is upon us and these young men need something more than just the basketball court to release their energy. Each mentee receives a haircut bi-weekly and a percentage of the money would go towards that. Each mentee will receive tee shirts, shorts and a pair of sneakers for outdoor activities. The mentees agreed that a trip to Washington, DC is necessary, during a discussion students expressed interest in seeing the new African American museum and the Martin Luther King Monument in Washington, DC.

Honored and grateful that Mentor Leaders Produce Mentor Leaders (MLPML) was selected as one of the recipients of the DAO’s Violence Prevention Grant Initiative.

Thank you again to District Attorney Larry Krasner, G. Lamar Stewart, the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office, and the Philadelphia Foundation for continuing to invest in grassroots organizations creating real impact throughout our communities.

This investment is bigger than funding — it’s an investment into our young people, their futures, and safer communities across Philadelphia. We truly appreciate the continued support of MLPML and our mission to empower the next generation of mentor leaders.

Grateful for the opportunity to be recognized and celebrated at the Spruce Gala 2026. 🙏🏾✨

Thank you to the Spruce Foundation for investing in organizations like ours that are on the ground doing the work—empowering young people, building leaders, and creating real pathways forward.

This moment isn’t just about recognition… it’s about responsibility.
Responsibility to continue showing up, to continue pouring into our youth, and to keep building something that outlives us.

Mentor Leaders Produce Mentor Leaders is just getting started. 💪🏾

Mentorship. Leadership. Family support. That’s the formula.

When a young person is surrounded by the right guidance, structure, and love… the sky is not the limit—it’s just the beginning.

If you know me, you know there are certain young people I don’t play about. I don’t play about this work. Because young people will follow your lead.

And this right here is what it looks like when we lead the right way.

Ghana bound. STEM Ambassador. Let’s go.

Real support. Real accountability. Real impact. 💯

Adam Geer speaking directly with one of our mentees about the partnership between Mentor Leaders and the Youth Violence Reduction Initiative — making it clear that support doesn’t stop here.

He’ll be checking in on his progress as he continues his journey.

This is what it looks like when young people are supported, guided, and held accountable.

The future is sitting in this room. 🌍🔥

Adam Geer reminding our young people that the work they put in today will shape the world tomorrow. Sacrifice now may feel hard, but in the big picture it prepares them to lead in the years ahead.

Thursday. 💡

The day after receiving the grant — and instead of celebrating, our youth got to work.

Every Tuesday and Thursday, we build.
We plan.
We lead.

Today was about strategy — deciding what to invest in, how to stretch the funding, and how to make every dollar create impact for the next group coming behind them.

This is what it looks like when young people are trusted with responsibility.
This is leadership in action.
