Free outdoor theatre presented in Malcolm X Park. Curated by Carlo Campbell, Walter De Shields and LaNeshe L. White.

Theatre in the X was created in 2013 to provide the people of West Philadelphia and the African American community at large the opportunity to see professional quality theater in their own neighborhood for no cost. Supported by the Leeway Art & Change Grant and the Friends of Malcolm X Park. The 2015 presentation is part of the City of Philadelphia's Performances in Public Spaces program managed by the Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy.

🎭 A look back at our community discussion of August Wilson’s Fences at White Rock Baptist Church this past Saturday.

We partnered with the University of Pennsylvania to bring selections from August Wilson’s powerful play to life for an afternoon of theatre, reflection, and conversation.

Through this collaboration, community members across generations came together to engage with the play’s enduring themes of family, identity, generational conflict, and the pursuit of the American dream. Moments like these remind us that theatre extends beyond the stage. It creates opportunities for dialogue, deepens our understanding of one another, and brings our community together through the power of storytelling.

We’re grateful to the University of Pennsylvania, the A.R.C.H.I.V.E. Ministry of White Rock Baptist Church, and our community partners for helping make this gathering possible.

Join us for a Community Discussion and performance of selections from August Wilson's "Fences"!

It's 1957 in Pittsburgh's Hill District neighborhood. The world is changing around Troy and Rose Maxson, their son Cory, and the rest of their tight-knit community. It's bringing hard questions to their front door. How can we do more than standing in the same place all our lives? What do fathers and sons owe each other? And do we build fences to keep strangers out or to keep the ones we love inside?

Supporting Black Theatre Day is an opportunity to celebrate the many shapes and forms Black theatre can take, from the stage to film, from movement and music to the stories created behind the scenes.

Through this short behind-the-scenes film, we invite you to see the people, process, and passion that make this work possible. Black theatre creates space for us to imagine, question, celebrate, grieve, and be free.

This year, For Colored Girls gave our women a space to explore freedom, sisterhood, and the fullness of their voices, while last season’s Fraternity invited our men to question what is next and what remains of the society we know. These stories remind us that Black theatre is not simply entertainment. It is a space for reflection, conversation, discovery, and possibility.

Supporting Black theatre means supporting the artists, communities, and stories that continue to create those spaces.

We’re still dreaming of the sister sanctuary that was our production of For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Su***de / When the Rainbow Is Enuf. 🌈 We hope you are too!

As we honored the 50th anniversary of Ntozake Shange’s groundbreaking choreopoem, we were reminded of the power, beauty, and necessity of these stories.

Thank you to everyone who supported us, laughed, cried, or yelled, “I know that’s right!” We could not have done this without you, because we do this for you.

🌈 The rain may have ended our final show early, but it could never wash away what we created.

We are so proud of our Color Girls, designers, crew, creative team, and community who made this weekend so special.

To everyone who showed up, supported, and shared in this experience, thank you. ❤️

Our stories deserve to be heard. Our stories deserve to be seen.

We’ll keep creating, gathering, and bringing accessible Black theatre to Malcolm X Park.
