Years before New York’s Stonewall Riots put the modern-day gay rights movement in motion, Philadelphia hosted some of the earliest demonstrations in support of LGBTQ rights. The first “Annual Reminders” protest took place at Independence Hall in Philadelphia on July 4, 1965, challenging discriminatory hiring policies, including a ban on hiring LGBTQ people for government jobs. Each year through 1969, protesters gathered in Philly to advocate for equal rights for the LGBTQ community.

Today, Philadelphia is home to a vibrant LGBTQ community, including groups of organizers who continue to advocate for the advancement of civil rights for all people.

Project HOME shares that commitment to equality and fairness, in housing and beyond. We believe everyone deserves equal access to the resources they need to thrive. We also understand the LGBTQ community has unique wants and needs. Every Project HOME residence strives to be welcoming and inclusive for everyone. In 2019, we opened our Gloria Casarez Residence to create a dedicated hub for LGBTQ members of our beloved community.

Firefighters are essential members of our communities, but fire departments as we know them today were unheard of until Benjamin Franklin founded the Union Fire Company in 1736, the first volunteer fire department in the United States. The earliest fire departments were private enterprises that provided protection only to members who paid to join their social club. Franklin’s “Bucket Brigade” was made up entirely of volunteers who supplied their own tools to protect the entire city. Firefighting continued to evolve over the years, but firefighters’ commitment to their communities remains.

Project HOME’s mission is rooted in similar values. We believe that everyone in our community benefits when our most vulnerable neighbors have their essential needs met; that everyone has a right to shelter, safety, and dignity. We believe that we can make Philadelphia the first major city to end chronic street homelessness.

Because none of us are home until all of us are home.

Hamin Muhammad overcame personal obstacles to achieve academic success. He recently graduated Academy at Palumbo and exited Project HOME's College Access Program with a scholarship to Temple University.

Project HOME residents enjoyed food, music, and fun with friends at a summertime potlatch celebration this Thursday at our Christopher J. Seward Residence. The event is always a favorite for staff and residents, but this event was extra special for one resident, who is moving to Inn of Amazing Mercy. She moved the audience with her rendition of Patti LaBelle's "You Are My Friend", which she dedicated to the connections she made at Seward Residence. New outreach staff member Erin added to the emotion with a heartfelt performance on her guitar. As the potlatch often is, it was a reminder of the power of community.
