We waited till the 11th hour to make the decision to cancel the birthday party today because we wanted to make sure we were doing what was best for our neighbors. However, we believe what's doing best is making sure that people stay safe and dry, especially with the high winds warning.

This is the first time in 6 years that we've ever canceled an event due to the weather. We will continue to stock the fridges and pantries as much as we can with the donations that we receive throughout the week.

Germantown Community Fridge turns 6 this Saturday 🥲😍😭 swipe through to see parties from over the years

Shout out to all the neighbors, volunteers, and comrades that have been showing love and support to neighbors via our community fridges.

What started out as an extra house fridge has grown into three community fridges/pantries that are accessible 24/7 to help curb food waste while sharing good food and essentials with neighbors FOR FREE 🎉

To celebrate 6 years we are hosting our yearly Birthday Party giveaway. Folks are encouraged to come by 12-2pm for free food, essentials & community 💛

Shout out to our neighbors at Germantown United CDC for hosting a great fundraiser Thursday night & dropping off their extra food so that it could be shared with the community ❤️‍🔥 over 60 platters and sides got labeled and redistributed to neighbors via the fridges!

Today we're hosting our monthly Neighbors Table, from 12-2pm ! Grab a meal then head over to Lonnie Young for GU's free plant giveaway as part of their Germantown Grows Together project 🌿🌱

We're doing our best to get stocked up on food, essentials, pet food & baby items for our birthday party on the 26th 🎉

Today we spent $378.48 at two different stores (before coupons bc you know we love to find deals)! This is your donations in action.

If you have the means consider supporting our efforts to share abundance with neighbors 💛 every $1 matters. If you'd prefer to pick out specific items to donate, shop our wishlists (link in bio) Or if you buy items irl you can drop them off at Eremita Cafe ☕

We still need volunteers to help the week of so please reach out if you're interested!

Shout-out to all the people that help make this event possible! It's always daunting prepping for this as it's our biggest giveaway but folks are forever grateful of the effort that goes into it.

Shout out to our Roxborough neighbors Eremita Cafe for helping us collect donations for our birthday party 🎉 next time you visit for your caffeine fix bring some non perishable food with you to share with neighbors 💛

Our biggest needs are:
🥯 Breakfast items (cereal, shelf stable milk, dried fruit, oatmeal, etc)
🥨 Lunch friendly snacks (granola bars, fruit cups, yogurt pouches, etc)
🥫Canned food (pop tabs preferred!)
🍚 Food that doesn't require a stove (tuna/chicken pouches, rice pouches, ramen, microwave non perishables)
🥣 Pantry staples (sugar, rice, pasta, spices, sauces)
Dietary restriction/allergy friendly (vegan food, gluten free, nut free, low sodium)
🧃 Bottles drinks

The community fridges are turning 6 😭🥲🥺

That means almost 6 years of neighbors supporting neighbors, 6 years of sharing resources and abundance, 6 years of keeping good food out of landfills !!! Words can describe how incredible its been to watch the fridges grow.

Come join us on September 26th 🎉 we'll be doing our biggest giveaway of the year.

As always, if you're coming by to "shop" please byo bags! We will have some available but everything we do is donation base so we can't guarantee that there will be enough bags for everyone.

If you are able to support please do! We can't do a giveaway without items to give away.

I'm Shan ✌🏻 one of the main fridge organizers, the volunteer that manages our socials, and our Amanda Staples shopper. I'll be honest saying that I gatekeep this volunteer task because it's truly such a beautiful part of my summer routine. Being able to pick out food intentionally that neighbors have requested or produce that I recognize moves quickly out of the fridges, is a gift. Being able to know that the produce is some of the most hyper local produce that we can share with neighbors, is a gift. Being able to put money back into our neighborhood, is a gift. Being able to swap recipes for produce at the farm to then share that information with neighbors that stop by the fridges, is a gift.

The farm also has its own time. Helping organize so many aspects of the fridge is something I take pride in, but at the same time the fridges can be a full time job on top of my paid time full job and freelance work. Some days my mind can't stop racing. But the farm is always a reminder of slowness and intentions.

We all patently and kindly wait to fill up our baskets with a rainbow of produce. I get to have conversations with familiar neighbors and have met a plethora of new folks through the farm stand and coffee lines. Growing food, takes time. Taking space to go to the fridges to leave or take food, takes time. Preparing food, takes time. In a world that rushes us so much as individuals, the farm is a space that pulls you back and roots you into the soil.

Today I had conversations with new faces about how we all interact with the fridges in different ways. Whether that's shopping at the farm, telling folks about the fridges while we navigate our communities, donating funds / shopping the wishlists, or sharing cannelais in Vernon park before putting bakery donations into the fridges. The theory of building and existing in community is one part of it but finding ways to make those theories reality is another.

Take some space one of these Saturdays to slow down at the farm. Tell our friends at the shack we say hello 💛 you won't regret it.

Thank you Pryce for highlighting mutual aid and community fridges 🥺💛

Community fridges are just that, fridges run by the community for the community. Our fridges don't run without community!!

We're grateful for every hand that has helped our neighbors whether that's cleaning, restocking, sharing posts, donating money or food, etc. Thanks to cooking volunteer groups we expect to make an estimated 20k meals by the end of the year 🤯 that's not even including meals that are left by others.

Words can't describe how thankful we are for all the folks that help make a positive impact for folks in Germantown. We love y'all forreal 💖
