Rattie Ratz

Rattie Ratz Dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and re-homing of domestic pet rats in the greater San Francisco Bay Area.

Rattie Ratz Rescue was established in 1998 and has grown into one of the largest federally recognized non-profit (501(c)(3)) rescue organizations in the country dedicated exclusively to domestic pet rats. Rattie Ratz operates a network of foster homes and accepts rats from shelters and the general public as space becomes available within our network. We are dedicated to responsible pet guardianshi

p, a lifelong commitment to companion animals, and a respect for all animal life. Improving the lives of pet rats and their guardians is the primary focus of our rescue efforts. We currently have programs for private surrender, shelter rescue, medical/behavioral rehabilitation, sanctuary, and adoption. We are solely supported by individual goodwill donations, adoption donations, and special events. The organization is governed by a volunteer board of directors, which oversees an annual operating budget. Rattie Ratz generally maintains between 50-100 rats looking for new homes. If you are interested in adopting please contact [email protected].

🐾 Foster Friday: Meet Cherry, Magnolia, Apple, Jasmine & Apricot! 🌸🍎
The sisters are about 6 months old, they are healthy, happy, and full of personality. They are incredibly curious and will be the first to greet you at the bars of their cage every morning.

Whether they are sprinting on their wheel or hunting for their favorite snack (Cheerios!), these food-motivated ladies are a constant source of entertainment.

Cherry 🍒 | Black Hooded The spunky one! She’s a confident climber and loves exploring during floor time.

Magnolia 🌸 | Black Hooded A total sweetheart, though she’s so food-motivated she might accidentally nibble your fingers if you smell like treats!

Jasmine 🌼 | Black Hooded The “kisser.” She is rather affectionate toward humans and her sisters.

Apricot 🍑 | Black Berkshire A stunning girl with a coat so sleek it shines. She’s truly quite gorgeous.

Apple 🍎 | Black Berkshire The athlete of the group! You’ll almost always find her getting her steps in on the wheel.

These wonderful girls are looking for a forever home where they will be loved. You can adopt 2 sisters, 3 sisters, or the entire group together!

Send us a message with any questions! 💌

🍑FOSTER FRIDAY🥝 Get ready for a double dose of vitamin C(ute)! Meet Kiwi & Peaches, the 7-month-old sisters. They are incredibly loving and friendly, with wonderful personalities. They’d be a perfect match for a family with kids! 💕

⚡️The girls are high-energy athletes and need a household that will give them plenty of time outside the cage and a safe space to free-roam, as well as mental stimulation and play. These are not couch potatoes, nor are they shy cage-hiders; they need active play and engagement. Kiwi & Peaches are fast learners and are well on their way to being litterbox-trained. 🚽 They are grazers when it comes to food; they are not food-motivated. However, they both take treats (Cheerios, puffs) nicely—they just aren't voracious eaters. 🤷🏻‍♀️

🥝🐀Kiwi is very outgoing; she immediately runs up to her foster mom to greet her with a kiss whenever she approaches the cage. She loves to explore, run, and jump, and she often gets the "zoomies" during free roam. Kiwi is quite wily and is always plotting her next escape route! That said, she also has a very affectionate side—she’ll even fall asleep on her foster mom’s lap.

🍑🐁Peaches is not quite as high-energy as her sister, but she is still very friendly and—in some ways—even more affectionate! She loves to crawl up onto her foster mom’s shoulder to shower her cheek with kisses. She is a big-time chewer and needs plenty of toys to keep her busy. She’s also quite the acrobat! She is often seen climbing upside down along the cage walls. Peaches has pink eyes, and we suspect her vision isn’t quite as sharp as that of other pink-eyed rats. She is also very petite, weighing in at only 200g.

Kiwi and Peaches are ready for their loving forever home 🏡 and can't wait to shower their humans with love and kisses! 💗They are truly affectionate ladies. If you feel like your home is missing a double dose of mischief and sweetness, these sisters are waiting for you! Whether they are zooming across the floor or snuggling up on your shoulder, they are sure to make every day brighter. ☀️

🗞️ Check out this month’s heartwarming KRL Magazine article about Bernie, a domestic rat found wandering the streets with a massive tumor, and Jimi, the gentle senior rat who became his best friend.

❤️‍🩹After being rescued, Bernie found his “heart human” in a wonderful Rattie Ratz volunteer named Olivia, underwent life-saving surgery, and learned the joys of hammocks and companionship. Bernie’s journey to health was only half the battle; he also needed a companion. 🐀Enter Jimi, a mellow senior rat who had recently lost his own cage mates. Jimi provided the calm, stabilizing presence Bernie needed. Despite their different backgrounds, the two formed an inseparable bond.🫂

📣🙌🏻👑We want to send big kudos to our wonderful volunteer, Olivia! 💖Not only did she step up to foster Bernie when he needed it most, but she also opened her heart (and her home) to give him a forever family. Thank you, Olivia, for your incredible compassion and for showing Bernie and Jimi what it truly feels like to be loved.🏡

🥺This story is a touching reminder that domestic pets rely entirely on us for survival and that even the smallest creatures can leave the biggest impact on our lives.

💖Foster Friday💖 Meet Jack & Casper. The boys are approximately 1 year old & can’t imagine their lives without each other.

🐀 Jack is a confident, social, outgoing boy. He is food-motivated & has yet to try a new treat he hasn’t liked. 🍬 He likes to hang out on his foster mom’s shoulder when he feels like it, but would much rather explore until he gets tired, or be held in your arms for pets & scratches.☺️ Jack believes in minimalism—and he’s more than happy to help you achieve it by trying to strip you of your accessories like watches, bracelets or glasses.

🐀 Casper is a very sweet & gentle little man. He is a bit hand-shy & can be nervous when you pick him up, but he tolerates being held & usually settles down once he’s been out for a while. When he gets excited, he’ll bounce around the cage like a puppy. He loves food puzzles 🧩 & digging boxes. Casper is a little gentleman & will take treats very gently from your hand. ❤️‍🩹 He has a weak back leg (we think it may have been a birth defect, since his previous owner said he’s always had it), but it doesn’t slow him down! No cage modifications are needed; he can get around multiple levels & hammocks just fine. He will sometimes come to the cage door, but more often than not will stay in his nest when you open the door, as he tends to be more cautious. 💗 Casper needs someone willing to be patient with him & to go at his pace. But as long as you have a steady supply of pumpkin seeds, he’ll be a happy rattie.

💖 If Casper & Jack caught your eye & you’re ready to open your home & heart to this cute duo, please reach out with any questions or come to meet them at our next adoption event in Walnut Creek on Sunday, May 3rd.
