Dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and re-homing of domestic pet rats in the greater San Francisco Bay Area.

Rattie Ratz Rescue was established in 1998 and has grown into one of the largest federally recognized non-profit (501(c)(3)) rescue organizations in the country dedicated exclusively to domestic pet rats. Rattie Ratz operates a network of foster homes and accepts rats from shelters and the general public as space becomes available within our network. We are dedicated to responsible pet guardianship, a lifelong commitment to companion animals, and a respect for all animal life. Improving the lives of pet rats and their guardians is the primary focus of our rescue efforts. We currently have programs for private surrender, shelter rescue, medical/behavioral rehabilitation, sanctuary, and adoption. We are solely supported by individual goodwill donations, adoption donations, and special events. The organization is governed by a volunteer board of directors, which oversees an annual operating budget. Rattie Ratz generally maintains between 50-100 rats looking for new homes. ⚡️Full of fun, curiosity, and goofy little antics, these young ladies love spending time with their humans, playing together, and exploring their play area. Their personalities are still developing, but one thing is already clear: they’re outgoing, affectionate, and absolutely love each other and their people!🤗

Ruth & Rosemary are Berkshire girls, while Patricia rocks a classic hooded look. 🥰 Three sisters, three little hearts, and so much love to share!

🫐Foster Friday🫐 Meet outgoing brothers Arlo, Billy, Caleb, David, Ernest, Finn, George & Hamilton! Yes, that’s 8 names for 8 handsome brothers — we weren’t kidding around! 😂 This group includes 2 hooded & 6 Berkshire boys! The boys were all born on July 15th (just under 3 months old), and they’re ready to bring some serious brotherly chaos, cuddles, and personality into their forever home. 🏡

💖 These brothers are social, energetic, playful, and healthy! They love hanging out with their humans, munching on fresh veggies, and getting plenty of time to roam, explore, and cause a little harmless mischief. 💙

👶🏻 Because they’re still young, their individual personalities are just beginning to shine. However, they’ve been handled since birth, so they’re naturally outgoing and love bonding with people. They’ll make wonderful additions to any family! 💕

🫶Foster Friday🫶 Meet Atreus & Titus, two handsome boys who are about 5 months old. Atreus is a beautiful blue with dumbo ears, and Titus is a mink-capped Rex with a lovely curly coat.

🐀🐁 Atreus & Titus are social, loving, & cuddly. They’re easy to pick up and love spending time out with their people, exploring their surroundings. They take treats gently and are curious about the world around them. When excited, they get short bursts of “zoomies,” which are super cute to watch. 🥹⚡️😍

☝🏻 Titus is the alpha of the duo and occasionally will remind Atreus who’s in charge, especially when he catches the scent of other rats. Because of this, Atreus & Titus would do best in a home where they can be the only rats.🏡

🐀❤️‍🩹 MEET MISHA, a 1-year-old boy who desperately needs sponsor support. Every two weeks, Misha needs to go to the vet just to keep eating.🦷

Misha suffers from malocclusion. 😢🦷❤️‍🩹 For those of you who don’t know, malocclusion is when a rat’s incisors are misaligned and don’t grind down properly. As a result, the teeth can grow abnormally long and eventually affect the rat’s ability to eat. In Misha’s case, his teeth are misaligned, causing one of his bottom incisors to repeatedly break.

Misha arrived at Rattie Ratz Rescue in June with his two brothers. 🏡 Because of his medical condition, Misha had to be separated from the brothers he had lived with his entire life and moved to our sanctuary home, where he will spend the rest of his life.

🪚His teeth need to be trimmed at the vet every two weeks. We have to keep his two bottom teeth the same length to prevent his bite from becoming even more misaligned. If we don’t, the top tooth opposite the broken one can grow extremely long and eventually make it impossible for Misha to eat. 😢

Each tooth trim is time- and energy-consuming 🪫 — Molly, our fantastic volunteer, drops Misha off at the vet early in the morning before work and picks him up in the evening — and, of course, these frequent vet visits are costly. 💸Misha bravely handles all of his dental trims.

💖Foster Friday💖 Meet Dyno & Borzoi, two sweet, hooded brothers looking for their forever home! 🏡These handsome boys are approximately 9 months old, and both are social, gentle, and perfectly happy to be picked up and cuddled.

These boys are neutered and truly embrace the lazy male rat lifestyle — they love finding a cozy box or hammock, curling up, and napping like it’s their full-time job. 😴🐀

🐀 Borzoi is the more outgoing of the two. He’s curious and active, and you’ll often see him exploring around the cage and checking out what’s going on.

🐀Dyno is a little more cautious and prefers the comfort of his hideout. His foster parents sometimes have to convince him that the world outside his cozy hideaway is worth exploring.

👀 Once they’re out, though, both boys are happy to chill in your hands and enjoy some pets. They also have an adorable habit of giving gentle little finger nips — their sweet, quirky way of showing affection.

⚠️ Dyno & Borzoi were neutered in May. A little while after surgery, Borzoi developed an abscess at the surgery site. He was seen by a vet, had the abscess drained, and was put on medication. Thankfully, he made a full recovery, and it has now been 3 weeks since he’s been completely healed. He’s happy, healthy, and doing great! ❤️ 🙏🏼

🐀💬 We believe in being completely open about our animals’ medical history, so we always share everything we know with potential adopters.

👉🏻 Since both boys have been neutered — which is a significant expense for the rescue — their adoption fee is $100 each.

🐀 Foster Friday🐀 Meet Nibbles & Bubbles, two gorgeous sisters who are about 5 months old! These girls are very friendly, but also VERY active and need plenty of time out of the cage for playtime and exploration.

🐁 Nibbles is a rare color: Russian cinnamon. This girl is super friendly; she runs to the front of the cage and begs to be picked up or petted anytime a person walks into the room. She even earns her name by trying to helpfully tidy up your ears, mouth, and nose! 😂

🐀 Bubbles is a beautiful Russian blue. She is high-energy and loves to run around and chase her sister, Nibbles. She loves to play tickle, pretending to protest and running away, only to come right back for more. 💕

🏡 These two would be a wonderful match for someone who enjoys interactive, playful rats and can give them plenty of out-of-cage time, attention, and opportunities to free roam.🤸🏽‍♀️

😍Foster Friday!😍 Meet Colin & Gregory, bonded 5-month-old brothers.

⚡️Friendly, healthy, and full of energy, they confidently explore their entire free-roam area, zoom through tunnels, wrestle like only brothers can, and happily devour shelled edamame.These sweet boys have made incredible progress learning to trust people. 💓

🐀 Colin is endlessly curious and loves exploring every corner of his world. He’s always looking for something new to investigate and has made remarkable strides in trusting human handling. While he’s still a little cautious about being picked up, his confidence grows every day. With patience, gentle handling, and positive experiences, Colin is sure to continue blossoming into a wonderful companion.

🐀 Gregory is playful, adventurous, and always ready for fun. Whether he’s racing through a tunnel or checking out a new toy, he brings plenty of entertainment wherever he goes. He’s still gaining confidence with being picked up, but he’s come a long way already. As his trust continues to grow, Gregory is well on his way to becoming a social and affectionate little buddy.
